she's just turned six and today she told me her armpits were smelly.i didn't take her seriously until i smelt them for myself and she smells like an adult with a mild case of bo.could this be an indicator of something else or can this be normal. she's had problems around her lower back and stomach for the past couple of days too.

ds age 7 has had this for a year - also has some fine pubic hair on his genitals- i am worried and am getting advice. sorry if i am the voice of doom

DD1 had this problem at about that age and then went on to develop physically. She was diagnosed as having precocious puberty at about 9 and we were told that she would probably start her periods before she was 10. She was 10 earlier this year and still hasn't..
DD2 is now 7 and frequently comes home from school with unpleasant underarm odour. She is not showing any other physical signs of pubertal development though. Does she wear the horrible school uniform? My DDs' perspire far more in uniform than in their other clothes which are almost entirely cotton. I allow them to use a deoderant for school (not an anti-perspirant) - the Green People one is good as is Avalon Organics. Does she wash herself? DD2 always forgets to wash her underarms which doesn't help!!
I wouldn't worry too much - just keep an eye on her development if you are really worried. The outward physical signs would be apparent before she started experiencing backache associated with periods (which I assume is what you were referring to).

My dd2 (just turned 7) has had this for a while - oddly, it seems at its worst just after she's had a shower. Her armpits really do smell bad. So bad sometimes, that I make her have a second shower.

She isn't particularly worried by it, which is good, and isn't showing any other signs of early development (unlike dd1, 9 who is hormonal as hell lol).

Can't really advise, as I haven't ever been worried enough by it to take it further, but at least you know she's not the only one...

emsiewill · 28/06/2006 22:02

Oh, and with my dd it's not all the time...a mystery really.

Jodiesmum · 28/06/2006 22:17

My dd is only 5 and has recently developed this problem. It is definitely much more noticeable when she's been wearing her horrible school dress but even with a cotton top on I can sometimes notice a sweat smell, especially if she's been running around a lot. I've been getting worried about the early puberty thing - does smelly armpits necessarily mean this is on the cards?

singersgirl · 28/06/2006 22:20

DS1 who is 8 in August also has smelly armpits on hot days. He is tiny, has hardly lost any baby teeth yet and really doesn't look at all as if he is going into precocious puberty. Perhaps they just start smelling less sweet earlier than we think....

The best indicator for determining whether your daughter will go through puberty early is whether you, her mother, did. When my daughter was being assessed I was asked as many questions about my development as she was.

thanks everybody for your input-only just got back on mumsnet.strangely, yoyo,i wasn't referring to period problems but now that you've mentioned it, i can't help wondering.yes, jodiesmum, she was wearing her school dress.i suppose that sort of material could bring the sweat out couldn't it?
I shower all my kids everyday-mostly-and i do tell them all to pay particular attention to feet, bums, underarms, necks and behind the ears so it's not as though they're not clean.however, i'm sure i've heard before that a shower can actually stimulate sweat glands and cause more sweat so that's a possibility aswell. i don't want to particularly start using anti-perspirants as yet if i can help it...seems a bit young for that. also, my hubbie who-although he takes real good care not to if he can help it-can produce a strong body odour smell and he also has cysts under his arms which sometimes burst-yuk!.for this reason, he can't use anti-perspirants either so i'm hoping she's not got the same problem as him.

Mine does too cutekids (she's 7 now but it started aged 6).

I think it's partly down to nylon school dresses. I know they have hormonal surges too which could have a bearing.

Don't worry or worry her. I've been trying to teach her to wash well without giving her a complex.
