Can you be allergic to a cold?

I know this sounds daft, but I'm allergic to lots of things. Whenever I get a cold, my chine and neck itch, sort of under the skin. I take antihistamines every day, but it still feels like this. It feels just like an allergic reaction starting. Sort of prickly and itchy..

It's more likely to be a minor auto-immune response. People with fibromyalgia get 'under the skin' pain, for example. When you catch a virus, your body launches a major immune attack. Some everyday regulatory functions get neglected as a result, and your immune cells may attack parts of your own system during the onslaught.

Histamine is an immune regulator. Although it's probably sensible to take anti-histamines if the irritation is disabling you, it's probably not sensible to take them if you can manage the itching. It may inhibit your body's capacity to deal with the virus.

Take a look at any potential allergens you might be introducing when you get a cold - decongestants are common culprits, and a lot of people are sensitive to salicylic acid (aspirin). If you want to be mega-cautious, it might also be worth asking your dentist to check for any underlying problems in your teeth and lower jaw.

Feel better soon!
