I had one done as an emergency a few months ago, as I was in a lot of pain and was apparently on the verge of developing an abcess. I found the most unpleasant part of it was the tension/adrenaline I had built up through being in pain (which hopefully you won't have) and the fear of the anaesthetic not working. I found it frightening to have to put such trust in the dentist. It didn't hurt, though, and when I had to go back to have the root canal filled, I was much more relaxed about it. I think it's really important that you feel you can trust the dentist.

i have. wasn't bad at all. i've had several, in fact and am going for another 10 july. i've got two bridges, too.

i've had so much dental work on my molars - my front teeth are straight and white, however - dental work doesn't bother me at all.

i've had three wisdom teeth extracted - all at different times - under local anaesthesia.

compared to knee surgery and giving birth w/no drugs, it's a cake walk.

I had this done last year after partially knocking out my tooth in a netball accident (don't ask!) I had a severe fear of the dentist and felt so scared about the whole thing. I have to say it did not hurt. The best advice I can give is take an MP3 player with you. I basically said to my dentist treat me like a five year old and we will get on just fine. I even made him put numbing cream on me before he started with the injection. I think the first time took about half an hour and I just closed my eyes and listened to my favourite music quite loud. It was a good distraction. The second visit took about the same amount of time. I have to say it even helped with my fears of dentist a bit and i think if i have to have anything done in the future, I will be a little less scared. Good luck and please try not to worry. These things are never as bad as we build them up to be.

I absolutely hate the dentist (dont know why as I always went and enjoyed the visits as a child) but now seem to have this phobia -mainly against the size of the needles they use!

I had to have two fillings done last week and my dentist is so fantastic he referred me to a sedation clinic so had them done under conscious sedation. I loved it - felt like I was asleep and woke up with it all done. Bad thing is one of them didnt calm down after as filling rlly deep so I am going for root canal at 8:30 tomorrow morning. I have been in agony and am on 2nd lot of antibiotics. Had to travel 15miles to go there today for 2 mins for the dentist (lovely south african guy) to say he will come in to work early for me tomorrow to do it as we are both due to go on holiday and it cant be left.

Now I know what its like I feel ok about it - couldn't you ask to be referred to a sedation clinic/centre too as its much better - doesnt cost any more than standard NHS treatment either.

Thanks to everyone who posted after my last post last night. Only 2 1/2 hrs to go until my appointment - tmi alert - have already had a dose of the runs in anticipation! . Just waiting for dh to come home now. I have no confidence in the dentist I am seeing which is the main problem. Think I will go privately after this is done. Thanks everyone for the support

Ach, too many boiled sweets in my teenage years methinks! I had a love of chocolate limes and kola cubes.. Paying the price now
