my BMI...

Apparently I am obese

My jeans are size 16/18 surely this can't be true????

IvortheEngine · 28/06/2006 17:56

I wouldn't be surprised. I went up to about 12 stone (from 10 1/2) due to a health problem and was a size 16 for a short while and I was classed as obese.

FFS why do the class a size 16 as obese, and then they wonder wht theres an increase in eating disorders.

cece · 28/06/2006 18:21

Am really depressed now.

I have just joined a new doctors and had a health check when I joined. Why didn't they say anything then?

Plus I was this size when I had ds and the midwife said not to worry about it!

If I had known I was classed as obese I would have done something about it! Starting to feel angry that no health professional has said anything to me before ffs! Maybe they jsut assumed I realsied I was so fat

fiofio

I am a bit shorter and a bit heavier so must have bmi of higher that that

have just had dinner and no cream on my strawberries

OP posts:
Expectantmum · 28/06/2006 18:26

Well that means that the majority of the population is "obese" then, cos whenever I go shopping, theres usually loads of size 10 and 12 and no 14 or 16!!! Mind you, after having weighed myself today, I am shamed to go back on WW and try and lose some of my weight.

cece · 28/06/2006 18:28

what really p**s me off is they want me to pay an extra £13 a month!

OP posts:
sparklemagic · 28/06/2006 18:30

do the life assurance officers come and weigh you??? Next time just shave a stone and a half off when you fill in the form!!!!

Expectantmum · 28/06/2006 18:31

Thirteen quid???? Thats outrageous.

cece · 28/06/2006 18:35

That is the thing I think it is outrageous £13 is a lot over 50% more per month! And no they didn't weigh me they are relying on me to tell the truth, although they did access my GP notes.... I actually guessed as I don't own scales.... When I had my recent ERPC they weighed me and sort of overheard her whisper it to herself...

Funnily enough I had bought some scales this morning at Tesco as I was a bit fed up my bottom didn't fit onto the seats at Wimbledon yesterday and thought something was afoot!

I am just so shocked. I knew I was a bit overweight but obese? I had to phone them up to find the reason - it just said medical reasons. I wanted to know as they had sent out two questionnaires about prior medical porblems so I assumed it was one of them. But no I am just a fat unhealthy person

OP posts:
AllieBongo · 28/06/2006 19:06

they want to know about everything. I used to underwrite life cover policies. That is a huge loading considering. They assume that you will develop high blood pressure, diabetes and other stuff that costs them money. Did you have a medical exam for them? That would have been a sensible thing for them to suggest, but again it costs them money the tight bastards. I would try someone else tbh

cece · 28/06/2006 19:11

no medical exam but they did get a report from my GP -who I have never met - having just moved house!

We have asked our financial advisor to find another comapny but will it be the same with them? I am on a diet as of 2 hours ago btw!

What really annoys me is that they have taken 2 months to come up with this figure -all this time we have had no alife assurance but a hefty mortgage. Will it take another company just as long? I am worried one of us will die and cuase all sorts of financial problems for the other

OP posts:
AllieBongo · 28/06/2006 19:36

which company is it?

cece · 28/06/2006 19:43

Standard Life

Dior, an extra £10 a month for Dh coz he had depression- he's off the tablets and everything!

Almost stopped us being able to take out insurance, they weren't even sure they'd give it to us.

AllieBongo · 28/06/2006 20:16

that's who i worked for. it was a long time ago. the usual process would be to refer for a medical with someone who isn't your GP as they can give an unbiased opinion. The report is the sent to the chief medical officer who will make a decision. What they have done is obtain a PMA from your Dr, who will just give information from your notes of past illnesses, which doesn't really give a clear picture of your current health

edam · 28/06/2006 20:21

Are you sure your BMI is over 30? £13 extra a month is a lot of money - £157 a year if my rusty maths is correct. How old are you? Diabetes, which is the main health risk, generally is a disease of middle age (type 2 diabetes caused by being overweight amongst other things). Also, public health people are moving away from BMI as it doesn't really predict ill-health. Waist circumference seems to be a better predictor. Can't remember what measurements you need to worry about - 35" for a woman, maybe - but BBC website will have it. All in all, I'd find another insurer, tbh, and don't panic, they are just trying to load your premium rather than saying anything terribly precise about your health.

cece · 28/06/2006 20:33

I am going to weigh myself once I have plucked up the courage. Bought some scales to day so I can see if my guess was correct on the form.

I am 39 so guess could also be something to do with my age. Plus my dad's family all get late onset diabetes.... (not sure if I was asked that on the form) - but they are all big iyswim

OP posts:
cece · 28/06/2006 20:34

edam not sure if waist measurement would be any better, as I am 'apple' shaped

I just feel so unhealthy now.....

Insurance companies do rip you off, my dad died of secondary cancer following bowel cancer at 42, because of that I am on a screening programme, bowel cancer is very treatable if caught early. I am paranoid of any problems down there, so with the screening programme that I am on and the way I am so paranoid I would imagine and hope that if I contracted bowel cancer it would be in the very early stages so totally treatable and cureable. Probably safer for me to contract it that somebody who has no history and isnt screened, but do the Insurance companies take note of that......

Also a friend of mine's DH was refused life assurance as his dad has a heart attack in his 40's and he himself had been for an ECG which showed nothing abnormal, just the fact that he had been for an ECG was enough for them to refuse his life assurance.

bluebear · 28/06/2006 21:43

I'm paying £80 a month instead of the original £15 quote for our (supposedly low cost) life assurance - because of post natal depression, which I was 'over' before the policy was taken out. They have said that they may reconsider after 2 years (but in a sort of 'you're lucky that we're insuring you at all' type way).
I was so paranoid I got a copy of the GP's report so I could see what she said, but there was nothing that disturbing, just confirmed PND and date of diagnosis.
