Hi, my ds aged 1 suddenly came down with a croupie type cough yesterdy afternoon. He wasn't too bad last night, but today he has had high temp, chesty cough and has slept nearly all day. I have been giving him Calpol for his temp, which is helping a little, and he has been having his inhaler. Is there anything else i can do ??? He looks so poorly, fed up and out of it

coughs are shite really because you cant do a thing. ds3 vomited last night he was coughing so much

lazyeye · 18/02/2004 16:14

Watch him closely. I've had lots of this lately with ds2 aged 16mnths. He has had a succession of chest/ear/throat infections which have mean't rounds of antibiotics. If the temp isn't coming down & he isn't picking up, don't waste any time and take to GP.

If it is croup, he may need antibiotics or one case I heard of needed some steriods.

Best of luck

Coddy love your "coughs are shite".

Thought it was only my weakling kids who get sick when they cough........

Blu · 18/02/2004 16:16

Poor thing. Some suggestions from our doctor when DS had croup, which did help:
Make the bathroom or kitchen really steamy with hot running taps, shower or boiling kettle, and hold him in there for a while.
Then out damp flannels, washing or towels over the radiator in whatever room he is in.
Put a pillow UNDER his mattress at the head end so he is sleeping on a slight slope

yes and so much for breastfeeding

the ds2 (bottle fed) is the helathiest of hte three

Blu · 18/02/2004 16:17

Er, I didn't mean hold him in the shower, - in the steamy room.

We are used to coughs being accompanied by being sick. DD2 is asthmatic and will not stop couhing until she's sick. Ds has already been sick, this morning, bringing up lots of lovely curdled milk
DD1 seems to be the only one who escapes constant coughs and colds, haven't a clue why.
Ds is fast asleep on the sofa at the mo. I haven't bothered giving him his dinner today, just lots of juice.

Ds coughs and pukes for Britain. He is a 'query' ashmatic at the moment as he is too small to do the peak flow teat. But he wheezes like hell if he is anywhere near a cat, so I am sure that he does have it.

He will frequently cough until he pukes. When he does this he will alwayy 'throw' 3 time...so when we hear 'the' cough we run like hell to get him to the sink. Bless him, he starts to run himself, it has happened so often. Dh and I are like a pit stop crew at stipping beds, washing carpets and conforting kids in the moddle of the night. We can do a whole clean up in less than ten minutes.....the skills that parenthood develops!

DS had croup last year - ending up in an ambulance trip to A&E - but the best advice I was given (by the paramedic) was to take ds outside if he had another croup coughing fit. (And sure enough, he'd stopped gasping for air by the time we were in the ambulance!) Apparently the sudden change in humidity helps to open up the airways.

By the way, the going outside thing helps with asthma attacks too (speaking from my own personal experience).

Vapouriser thingies from Boots are great..... Ds suffered from croup for about 5 years on and off and these gadgets REALLY helped hi ( and me ) They chuck out soothing smells ( like Olbas Oil ) - think it's eucalyptus and peppermint .. good for soothing dry throats and coughs.

nutcracker · 19/02/2004 19:23

Thanx for all the help.
We eventually took him to the docs last night as his temp was not getting any better. He said he thought it was croup and just gave us some info on it and then a perscription for calpol.
He seemed alot better this morning but now he has really gunky eyes and i feel like i'm coming down with it too

I thought he was getting better but he's not. His eyes are really gunky now so i've got some drops from the chemist. The woman behind the counter said "why don't you go to docs and get a perscription for them" (they were nearly a fiver), but i really don't want to go back just for that.
He's still hot too, so i'm giving him plenty of Calpol and juice.
He's just so fed up. I've had to sit him in his pushchair for a bit, as he's been sat on my lap for the past 2 hours, and i'm now covered in snot and gunk

my GP swears by snufflebabes for coughs/colds ... always seems to give mine more relief than tyxilix (sp?) & co.

These viral things go on and on don't they? dd seems to suffer for about 2 weeks when it's a bad one, then sometimes has relapses and gets worse, then better again. There are so many of them about at the moment, everyone's kiddy seems to have something or other.
