Its half term, we were planning lots of nice things and poor dd has got the pox Feeling rather lousy today, first spots appeared last night but loads today.
This may be a piece of string question but does anyone know how long its likely to last, or at least how long til she starts scabbing over and stops being infectious?

Didn't take ds to doctor: it had been going around - this is the time of year for it. Did phone dr though but only because I was 36 weeks pg and wanted to check out any risks. His best tip for ds was to avoid calamine and put bicarbonate of soda int he bath.

I phoned the surgery so it could be noted down on the dd's records. With dd1 they were very surprised as there was no one else in the whole area or at school with CP. I think she caught it on a school trip to Alton Towers!

thanks for your replys !!

Ladymuck - why avoid calamine? DD is covered in it ATM !!!!

Thanks for the detailed response Georgina...very informative !

Had no idea how hideous chicken pox can be until one of my twin DDs had it terribly, completely covered from head to toe, in her mouth, up her bottom, everywhere, could barely see any unaffected skin. The spots became infected and she had a temperature of 104. Her sister managed to avoid it for two weeks then got away with about 5 spots.

bottersnike · 19/04/2004 11:15

Yup, ds is just getting over his spots. He's been absolutely covered in them, and had a huge repulsive one on his foot that both dh and I really wanted to burst!! ( we didn't )
We were recommended Piriton but as he's only just 1, I used Calpol and cool baths, which he loved.
You really feel for them, don't you?

My ds was exposed to a very contagious child 19 days ago. He came out with one big red spot on his lip yesterday after 4 days of seeming rather unwell but spot seems to have faded and no new ones have appeared. His younger sister is also poorly (v. bad diarhoea for over 4 days) but no spots! Have just cancelled holiday through fear of cp (see thread 'Chickenpox and air travel'!!) but now think neither of them may actually have it?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

jimmychoos · 19/04/2004 12:59

Haven't read all this thread Boomama, but my dd has just had it and she had one big spot on her tummy for about a week before the rest appeared. A friend told me this is v common and it is the 'queen spot' (urgh) from which the others 'breed'. So...the one on your son's lip may be the same?

BooMama · 19/04/2004 13:09

jimmychoos - thanks for that info! I hadn't heard that before. I'm really hoping he has got chickenpox so we can finally get it out of the way. And also to justify cancelling the holiday!

Hello i'm new here and hoping someone may be able to help me. My ds was exposed to chicken pox 2 weeks ago, this morning he has been sick but is fine now. So just wondering whether the two could be connected.

BooMama · 20/04/2004 09:29

Hi Laura2001 - I'm new here too and it was my not knowing about chickenpox that got me posting too! I have been told that cp normally arrives 14-21 days after the exposure. I am now on day 20 and still waiting to see if spots appear on my two - they've both been poorly but no spots! Very frustrating as I really want to get it over with!
I hope somebody with more experience of cp can provide some answers for you!

LadyMuck · 20/04/2004 20:56

Bigbird, I'm not sure it was that the calamine would be bad, just the bicarb in water was more efficient. Nothing to compare with but he didn't seem to scratch much or anything.
