Mix it in with something eg milk? Put it in a syringe for novelty factor (if you don't normally use)?

mummyplonk · 27/09/2013 20:24

Gosh that's too high if bribery won't work I agree with syringe at the far back of his cheek.

Sirzy · 27/09/2013 20:26

I agree with syringe to the back of his cheek.

Does he have a dummy? if so into the side of that can work.

If he can have brufen I would try to get that in instead as it is better for high temps

Also to help bring his temp down if you have a fan put that on on osscilate to cool the air around him (not on him directly)

Rooners · 27/09/2013 20:34

Have you spoken to the Dr? That high is a bit of a concern really.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/09/2013 20:36

That is too high to be allowing him to say no. You get it into him by whatever method - syringe is probably best.

17leftfeet · 27/09/2013 20:36

Have you any yoghurt you can mix it in?

notanyanymore · 27/09/2013 20:37

That's too high, I'd ring 111 for that

Rooners · 27/09/2013 20:39

I'm not sure what the facilities are like where you are but if you call 111 they should get your child seen quickly.

Otherwise turn up somewhere and insist,

good luck
you need to get meds in there somehow.

EnglishRose1320 · 27/09/2013 20:49

Have managed to get him to take 3/4 of the dose for his age with a syringe. He has gone to sleep on my lap atm, will give the medicine time to work and then the take him temp. Thanks for all your advice. I prefer brufen as well Sirzy but none in atm and partner working away so stuck at home.

The temperature will be making him irrational, manhandle him out of the pjs and try adding Calpol to blackcurrant squash or syringing into his cheek (better if there are two of you for a child his age, one to pin down, one to get it in quickly). Ignore screaming, thrashing and tantrums, he will soon calm down once he cools down a bit.

Check the room temperature, make sure it is around 18 degrees and open a window if it is too hot.

Try and get fluids into him.

Tepid sponging or lukewarm bath may provide temporary relief as his temperature is over 39.5, if sponging cover him with a towel, use lukewarm water and start with his face, then forehead, nape of neck, arm pits and groin. Dry each one after sponging. Then sponge front and lastly his back. Take your time and do not allow him to get cold as that will cause vasoconstriction and cause his temperature to rise, if he starts to shiver stop straight away

AnotherStitchInTime · 27/09/2013 20:53

X-post, well done, 3/4 of a dose should be enough to lower his temperature a little. If it hasn't reduced after half an hour call 111 for advice.

Lazybones12 · 27/09/2013 20:53

Hold him down or try and get your hands on a paralink sepository (sp)

Rooners · 27/09/2013 21:08

Please at least speak to a doctor. Any idea what is causing the temp?

EnglishRose1320 · 27/09/2013 21:22

He has just started a new nursery school so I figure he has picked up a virus maybe?
His temp is down to 37.9 now so calpol is starting to work and he is asleep in his bed.
Will keep an eye over night and call a doctor if anything changes

Oh good one. That's wonderful news on the temp.

I often find when it is that high it's tonsils. Or ears. See how he goes.

hope you get some kip too.

EnglishRose1320 · 27/09/2013 21:50

He did say his throat was hurting so maybe tonsils, will check when he next wakes, having a rather late dinner then hopefully going to get some sleep. Although have just discovered my 8yr old has taken full advantage of me being distracted with his brother and until a few minutes ago was very quietly playing on the laptop rather than settling, little monkey!
