Green Poo. Any Knowledge?

Hiya i know new born babies get green poo, but my ds is 5 months and its gone green. Been grizzley all week, think because im weaning off breast and formula may be bunging him up. Thought id try a formula aided for easier digestion.Omneo Comfort, by Cow & Gate instead of the SMA. Just wondered if anyone has had similar problems? Thankyou

DD had some green poo, but when she was still fully b/f and I linked it to too much foremilk and not enough hind milk and it resolved itself from my changing that.

But in my various investigations about what might be causing it I found out that basically green poo happens when the digestive system is working too fast, i.e. irritated in some way, so that the food comes out not fully digested. Halfway through the intestine it's quite green, goes brown towards the end.

Yuck I know. Maybe the formula doesn't suit his system. Are you sure he doesn't have a cow's milk allergy?

charlieplus3 · 17/02/2004 21:11

It was brown when i was fully breastfeeding?

Trying a different milk tonight, but hes not settling seems really windy as burping alot.

Allergy is a possibility as Father has a milk intolerence

Any reason to wean off breast? Can you not stick with it?

charlieplus3 · 17/02/2004 21:21

i know wish i hadnt now. Still feeding him morning and once in day for comfort. Weaning him off as hes getting so big and im never sure if hes got enough. He keeps pulling off and taking my nipple with him.

Should i try different formulas first or just have him tested for a milk intolerence.

He can't be that big surely? If you've breastfed him so far you have enough milk for sure. Why not go back to breastfeeding for another few weeks until his gut is more mature and you are feeding solids. I personally mixed fed with formula but it didn't affect my ds.

charlieplus3 · 17/02/2004 22:08

May try that Aloha. Will it take long to get my supply up again. Only cut down in the last 2 weeks.

I did start weaning then stopped again as wanted to get him used to Formula first.

No he isnt that big, about 18llbs,but my ds was always underwieght so i see him as a big healthy boy

I'm feeding a one year old, and he hasn't complained so far about me not having enough. If it ain't broke don't fix it I say.

If you do want to try a different formula then you might want to bfeed solely until poo gets back to normal, or you won't be sure which one he is reacting to.

charlieplus3 · 17/02/2004 22:23

Good Point Bob. I was getting fed up though with b/feeding and now ive upset his little tummy

The best thing to get his tummy back to health is breast milk. Now you have seen the alternative, is the idea of bfeeding more attractive than a grizzly baby and stinky nappies?

I'm sure if you give it a while and try again it will be better. I am trying to bfeed up to a point where ds can tolerate yoghurt and cheese and therefore doesn't have to drink straight milk.

It's horrible when they get sick like this but don't beat yourself up. Sometimes when I try a new thing my ds ends up in hospital, but most of the time it's fine and he loves it.

Charlie, not sure from your post if you're already using the Omneo Comfort or if your ds had green poo on SMA. But we used Omneo for ds and it did give him rather green, runny and very smelly poo, also sometimes quite yellowy. Pretty revolting but he was OK.

Hope he's OK now anyway.

aloha · 18/02/2004 23:12

I think RobinW meant to put goats' milk formula - ie Nanny. Might be worth a try. But even another four weeks of breastfeeding could possibly make a big difference in terms of his gut.

mears · 18/02/2004 23:18

I personally would up the breastfeeds. He obviously is better on that than formula. You are certainly capable of producing enough milk for him. It will not take long to up your supply since you have only just started weaning.
That to do is feed him at the breast first then offer his formula. With each feed, reduce the formula by an ounce each day. That way you will stimulate milk production without worrying that he isn't getting enough milk. Another way to do it is just take him to bed for the day and go for a feedathon. The more he feeds, the more milk he will make. Worth a try.

thanx everyone. Poo is now very runny and yellowy green, i think thats the omneo kicking in. Hes not as grizzly and i am offering more breast but am woried incase he has same reaction to food weaning.

I supose i can fix this problem then see what happens

cp3, dd had a cow's milk intolerance which she grew out of by 1 year old. She was mostly breast fed but by about 10 months when I was back at work part time I gave her 'Nanny' the goats milk formula in her cereal and a bit to drink and she was fine with it. It's a bit more expensive though.

bobthebaby · 19/02/2004 23:26

With food weaning you can give a tiny bit, wait three days, then a tiny bit more, then wait three days etc. until you are giving a reasonable quantity then move to another food once you are sure. There are lots of foods so you will be fine. My ds ate sweet potato almost exclusively for about a month because everytime we tried new stuff we got green poo. Now he accepts new things much better and eats over 30 different things - all of them healthy. I know it won't last but I'm proud of the great start I've given him and sure he will forgive me the occassional green poo, massive vomit and trips to hospital.

I am going to Docs with him on Mon just to check as poos still green so reluctent to start food weaning yet.

I know most have advised me to go back to fully b/feeding bit its hard when dp works so much and i have a toddler to fighting for my attention and so i want to stick to my decision to formula feed unless this is whats making him ill.

I do b/feed him at night and morning and im proud that ive done as long as 5 months as i only managed 3 with ds.
