do i really need to take her?

she gouged a hole out of the front of her nappy, and has eaten at a guess a fingerfull or 2.

Can you call a poison unit?

misdee · 25/06/2006 16:17

i dont know the number. what is the stuff called that they put in nappies?

i'll be glad when her nappies are all dried(i boil washed the lot as she had bad nappy rash and in case she had thrush)

It has the same effect as silica gel. I would call NHS Direct at the very least.

edam · 25/06/2006 16:17

Call NHS Direct and ask them to call the poisons unit for you. Shouldn't take long. We had to do this when ds found some rat poison. Fortunately he was fine. Dh was less fine by the time I'd finished with him, however.

alexsmum · 25/06/2006 16:17

call a & e and they will check the poison 'book' for you.

Itsthawooluff · 25/06/2006 16:18

NHS direct? 0845 46 47

Or the manufacturer of the nappy - number on the pack?

WideWebWitch · 25/06/2006 16:19

Hang on, googling for you

WideWebWitch · 25/06/2006 16:20

I'd take her, it's hard to find much about it without wading through tonnes of info.

Kelly1978 · 25/06/2006 16:22

well silica gel isn't poisonous, just shouldn't be inhaled.

its sodium polyacrylate

madmarchhare · 25/06/2006 16:26

You would imagine that given they are used in nappies that they wouldnt be highly dangerous though, wouldnt you?

misdee · 25/06/2006 16:27

nope. i dont usually use disposables beause of the chemical gels.

Kelly1978 · 25/06/2006 16:27

so far all I can find is that it wouldn't be harmful unless huge amounts were ingested, which would cause dehydration. Personally I would give plenty of fluids and keep an eye on her.

Found this:
sodium polyacrylate is the superabsorber in disposable nappies
and
Here
"Diaper Demo uses sodium polyacrylate. Do not ingest sodium polyacrylate; it is toxic. Avoid exposure to the eyes. Do not inhale sodium polyacrylate. Safety goggles should be worn when working with sodium polyacrylate. Wash hands immediately after handling sodium polyacrylate. Take care when disposing of any item containing sodium polyacrylate. Place in a sealed plastic container before disposing. Do not pour any sodium polyacrylate down the sink."

Im not saying dont get it checked out, but surely the ammounts we are talking about in the examples given below are much larger quanities and more refined.

Im not up for a huge debate btw, just trying to lessen any anxiety for misdee here .

misdee · 25/06/2006 16:38

NHS are calling the poisens unit for me.

dd3 seems fine to me. i am sure that for a small 16month old (20lbs or there about) that a fingerful or 2 is a larger amount tho?

dd3 is a pleasen child really, even tho she pooed on the floor when i removed the nappy lol.
