Things getting stuck in my throat

For the last 2years since I was intubated I have had a problem with certain food stuffs getting stuck in my throat. It started with bread then beef and now also potatoes !!! ( so no beef sandwiches and chips for me !!!!)
These bits of food can get stuck for upto 6/7 hours :( I can breathe all the time but can't swallow and keep filling up with salvia that can't go down.
I have tried all sorts of thing to make the food budge warm water cold water Pepsi ect nothing works . Eventually the food moves (bloody painful) and that's that . I've been to ent and they have seen me in a and e and say its not my throat it's further down :{ .
I'm now awaiting an enderscope ( had one a few years ago for gerd ) to see if they can find a cause. I suffer from allergies and anaphalix shock but drsays it's not an allergic reaction ???? Anyone got any ideas while I lay here with a sodding bagel stuck in my throat :(

you need that endo fast - how long have they said you are going to wait?

i am having issues but mine is caused by reflux and im seeing a surgeon next week,
if you are having trouble getting bread and meat down you need to see someone quickly, as in an urgent referral.

Maybe eosinophilic oesophagitis ? Allergic reaction to food causes white blood cells to gather in oesophagus and causes scarring and thickening of the tissue.

Thank you people l am off to badger my gp this morning.the bagel is still in my throat :(

Agree with Vicar ,you definitely need an endoscopy quickly .

And if it shows all clear and you're still having trouble please go back to GP and pester .Something is wrong ,it might " just" be something mechanical caused by intubation but seems unlikely .

Let us know how you get on .

Could it be achalasia? A friend of mine had this and certain food were more difficult to swallow than others (bulky carbs were the worst)

No advice but really feel for you - DH gets this. Worst was when he couldn't drink for 24 hours - he never goes to doc but took himself to A&E. was kept in overnight, food was pushed out the way with the wee camera thing :(

I don't want to be alarmist ,honestly ,but food getting stuck is a symptom of oesphageal cancer .
It's a cancer which often isn't discovered early .Obviously much more treatable if discovered early .
Spongy ,bulky food like bread will stick ,as will meat ,prawns etc .Toast and crunchy stuff can be easier .
An endoscopy is needed - roughtyping your DH needs investigation .

Ginger, he's had investigations and they've found nothing - no idea what they were looking for though

Worriedkat · 27/09/2013 12:33

I have this a little, plus the sensation of something stuck on the other side of my soft palate/nasopharynx. ENT appt not until 13th Dec! I am not urgent apparently. God it's annoying though :(

gingeroots · 27/09/2013 12:45

roughtyping - I guess they'd be looking through an endoscopy camera for visual changes to surface of oesphageous - different colour /texture and taking sufficient ( ie 7 ) biopsies to test if any changes to cells .

dh just had an endoscopy because he had trouble swallowing food for a few days (dysphagia). He also had reflux at night, and his was due to hiatus hernia and will be sorted with Omeprazole (I have a hiatus hernia too, since pregnancy, but never had the swallowing issue).

There are lots of things that can cause it, OP, but it sounds so unpleasant and you should have your endoscopy within 2 weeks - with dh, he was told that was the acceptable time frame, anyway.

Throat-wise, for those getting it higher up, it can be structural - I get bits of bread/rice etc sticking on one side of my throat at times, have been to ENT and been scoped, and its just normal ageing tissues apparently Blush aka 'one of those things'.

DH gets this. He has, we have discovered after much pushing of doctors for a diagnosis, a web in his throat, possibly 2 of them. It's a bit like that piece of skin between your thumb and forefinger. When he gets things stuck he can't swallow and ends up getting dehydrated. When it gets bad he takes himself down to A&E.

He's on the waiting list to have it removed (and has been for a year)
