Any gps there to explain chest x ray results please

Basically my chest x ray shows a consolidation and suggests antibiotics and repeat x ray in six weeks. My gp says it isn't really suggestive of anything and not to worry but I am worried. I've had a niggling pain in my left upper abdomen x

It's common and may suggest chest infection

Why did you have the x-ray?

mandmsmummy · 20/09/2013 19:13

Is it common? I have no symptoms of a chest infection.
I had it after two months of a niggling pain as I mentioned above plus generally not feeling well. X

Worrying for you but be led by your GP :)

Is the right bored of the heart on the right side of the chest? My gp is great but I am worried x

Not a GP - consolidation is the presence of liquid in the alveolar spaces which are normally filled with air. Often caused by infection such as pneumonia. Hence the antibiotics.

The pain you describe could be pleuritic chest pain which is an inflammation of the lining of the lungs and can also be caused by infection
.
You can also have something called "walking pneumonia" which is not typical pneumonia and does not necessarily present like "normal pneumonia".

Your GP would been smarter to actually explain things properly so you could understand what was going on.
I think you should go back to your GP and ask why he has prescribed medication for something not suggestive of anything.

If you have any difficulty in breathing or develop a fever or other symptoms seek more urgent advice from A &E

Thanks, I've had the pain since July so I'm not expecting anything awful to happen like pneumonia x

This is actually not uncommon and when the GP says its not suggestive of anything he will mean not suggestive of anything serious. Most reports like these come back saying "area of consolidation, suggest treat with antibiotics and repeat X-ray in 6 weeks" I really wouldn't worry. I see these from time to time and they present with really mild symptoms as some one else said "walking pneumonia"

Thanks musicaltheatremum x

When I had a chest infection with the lu, GP called it a @lesion@ on the x-ray image'. I too had to have a follow up x-ray after 6 weeks and it had gone.

But I had no pain in my chest.
Good luck

lesion

mandmsmummy · 21/09/2013 08:37

Is the pain a bad sign then? I'm 37 never smoked so my gp says there's no way it could be lung cancer but I'm very worried it might be. Six weeks is a long time to wait x

Pain fits with silent pneumonia or a pleuritic condition

You will be fine. The 6 week return is routine and precautionary. Try and relax and believe this because 6 weeks is a long time to be so anxious

mandmsmummy · 21/09/2013 13:00

Thanks tired dog! You're right x

I'm sure it's nothing and will be sorted really easily, but just wanted to say your GP is v ignorant to say that it can't be lung cancer because you've never smoked

mandmsmummy · 21/09/2013 17:13

I thought the same to be honest x
