Sleeping tablet question

My GP prescribed sleeping tablets. They don't seem to be working. On the box/leaflet etc it says the dose is 2 tablets, my doctor wanted me to just take one at a time. I have an appointment for next week but I am feeling DESPERATE for some sleep so should I just take 2 tonight rather than the 1 I've been told to take and see how it goes? DH is urging me to do this. My eyes are hurting so much typing this as I'm so, so tired

I wouldn't. There may be specific reasons that your GP wanted you to start with a lower dose. e.g other health issues, other tablets you are on, more recent advice about how to introduce sleeping tablets from the professional bodies etc

Have you tried basic sleep hygiene measures? This looks like a good site:

Could you go to the pharmacist for advice. I would go back to the doctor if you can

I absolutely know what it is like to have insomnia and be that tired. The thought of not sleeping for yet another night is unimaginable.

Antidote has given you great advice and a good link too.

I disagree with the 'don't read in bed' bit, but the rest I try to stick to.Smile

I've also experienced hideous insomnia.

Sleeping pills can be addictive. The GP is probably hoping that one will relax you enough to encourage sleep. Don't plan on driving anywhere in the morning. They used to make me feel quite groggy. They are not something I'd like to get too used to.

Hope you feel better soon. A lot of us have been there.

So I was right to tell DH I'd carry on trying with my 1 measly tab Wink
I do at least try to follow those rules linked above. I know I should cut down on the amount of tea I drink though.
I don't think I can remember what it's like to not feel tired...

Which pill is it? I've not needed them for years now but went through a really hard time sleeping. I actually found something like Diazepam better than the "knock out" pills you have probably been prescribed. More of a hangover effect the next day, though, so it reallydepends on your lifestyle. Maybe phone the GP and ask further advice?
