High blood pressure

Hi, I had my blood pressure checked this morning and the reading was 150/80. The nurse said she's happy with it. I need to have it recheck in a month's time. I know 150 is mildly high but she said there is no need to worry?

blood pressure website

Lots of people have a 'one off' high reading (white coat hypertension) from anxiety so a repeat measure in a month would be sensible.

Why not try looking at some of your other risk factors in the mean time? Then you'll feel you are doing something positive about your health.

Lots of good advice on the link above

They normally get 3 readings on different days to confirm high blood pressure, anyone can have a one off higher reading.

Try not to worry and get it checked again.

Please try not to worry about this - easier said than done I know! If they were really concerned then they would put you on tablets straight away. Depending on your BP reading at the next appointment, they may ask you to do a 24 hour check. You have to wear a machine for a day (I had to have it on approx 9am-5pm) and it takes regular readings which can then be analysed back at the surgery.

I had a routine check 3 months ago and found that my BP was significantly raised (230/120). There is no cause for this, I am slightly overweight but not significantly so, eat a healthy diet & exercise. Unfortunately for me it is a genetic issue, so I will be on tablets now for life. I do not appear to have any side effects with the tablets and I feel extremely fortunate that this issue was picked up before it caused me any significant health issues.

I am sure that you will be fine, but good advice from Antidote to look at any risk factors that you may be able to change with a few lifestyle improvements. I have lost weight & intend to lose more, have cut back on alcohol and eat more fruit and veg etc.

Probably though your reading was due to anxiety at having to be checked in the first place!

Thanks ladies for your reassurances. I am not that worried, but rather not be on tablets. I think it's due to stress as I am quite stressed lately. The nurse thought so too.

Now, 230/120 BP is high BP. Hope the pills manage to reduce itchoco

OP 150/80 is not high BP. The lower < diastolic> is perfect and the one that is more important said my GP.

chocolatelime · 22/09/2013 22:52

It has come down to something a bit more respectable, thank you digerd. Was a shock at the time though, not what I was expecting at all.

The systolic BP is very variable and increases with exercice and excitement, nervousness and all emotions.
120/80 is supposed to be ideal. Some people have low BP. My SIL had 100/60 and even when stressed out to her limits only went up to 115/70.
She was told she had an exceptionally good cardio vascular system.
< being 5' and 11 stone, we were all rather Hmm Envy.
