Non-medical ways to get rid of my headache!

I am going out tonight. I hardly ever go out, really looking forward to it.

I have got the headache from hell - I always get a headache with AF & got a bit of a cold as well which isn;t helping.

I am taking paracetamol & ibuprofen but they won;t completely knock it dead.

I'm sure there are some acupressure points I could be massaging or something...

Please?

I suffer from cluster migraines and the only thing that does it for me is the pills PLUS half an hour lie down in dark room. May not be an option for you. Sorry, crap help!!!! Just for me, I need to get me head sort of level, it seems to come from the base of my head.

FrayedKnot · 23/06/2006 17:21

I did have a bit of a lie down after lunch niceglasses - and tbh going back to bed would ease it I know, but I REALLY want to go out. I have also committed to a ticket which I won't get the money back for if I don;t go.

drink lots of water, and a cool flannel on your forehead/over your eyes

well works for me

WigWamBam · 23/06/2006 17:28

If you want to try some accupressure, you could try some of these:

Massage your head as if you were shampooing your hair. Put your thumbs underneath the base of the skull on either side of the nape of your neck. Tilt your head back slightly and press upward for 2 minutes while breathing deeply.

Or, apply pressure to the fleshy part between your index finger and thumb - try to apply deep pressure for at least a minute.

Another place to try is on the back of your forearm. Measure three finger widths above the crease of your wrist, and apply pressure for at least a minute - try and feel that you are pressing between the two bones in the lower arm.

WWB I've done that second one with the finger and thumb - it really works

That one's really good for a headache right above the eyes, LotosEater - I use that one a lot.

Whizzz · 23/06/2006 17:34

One of those headache stick cooling things works if you catch it early enough (which maybe you haven't) - can't remember what its called though !!

WigWamBam · 23/06/2006 17:42

Something else you could try is some lavender essential oil, if you have any - put a little on your wrists and your temples. If you can then go and lie down in a darkened room for 10 minutes so much the better, but the oils can help on their own.

I used a rag soaked in vinegar when preg with Dd1 and I had awful headaches.

Just lie it across your head and go and lie down for a while and the headache goes.

You'll stink like a chippy though, thats the only thing.

KBear · 23/06/2006 17:45

Drink at least a pint of water, you could be dehydrated.

Frozen peas on your forehead.

Get someone to massage your shoulders.

Strong cup of coffee.

Apparently an orgasm can cure a tension headache.

FrayedKnot · 23/06/2006 18:28

Dh has just got home but I don;t think serentity's option is on the cards as DS is still roaming about

Am off to try the lavender and acupressure..

thanks everyone!

May have missed you but a good reflexology point is to squeeze the very tip of your big toes-thumb on nail and finger under toe and squeeze at tip. Works for me.

serenity · 23/06/2006 18:49

my way's more fun have a nice evening.

rabbitrabbit · 23/06/2006 18:52

You're right serenity. And it does work

ilovecaboose · 23/06/2006 18:54

Yep serenity it works here too!! The problem is just getting into the mood. NEedless to say 'I've got a headache' has a different meaning in this house!
