Normal TSH but feeling hyper

Is it possible to have a TSH at the low end of normal and yet be hyperthyroid? I am losing weight, have frequent loose bowel movements, disturbed sleep and my anxiety levels are at the point where it is beginning to threaten my work and home life and I am having suicidal thoughts.

I have been to the GP who said that my thyroid wasn't the problem it was stress (related to work). However, I have never felt like this before except when I was hyperthyroid in the past.

I had partial thyroidectomy in 2012 to help with that and have been on levothyroixine ever since. I felt great when my TSH was around 5 but the GP upped my dose to get towards the lower end of the scale and now I feel over-medicated. However, as I am in the normal range my GP doesn't want to adjust my dose. I have been signed up for CBT which I am finding next to useless.

Any thoughts on this would be welcome because I am finding it really hard to focus and think at the moment.

If you are Hyper, then your T4 would normally be much too high.
Do you know what your T4 and TSH were when you were Hyper?

I had the partial Thyroidectomy in 1974 and remember my symptoms.
My pulse was really high, BP too. I do not know what the values of my T4 or TSH were though.
It you are Hyper your pulse will be high and GP should have checked it.

TSH is not the most reliable indicator. However, if your FT4 and FT3 are both over range and in conjunction with a below range TSH, it is likely that you are hypER.

Also, if you are on levo, you can play around with it a bit. I don't know what dose you're on now, but you could reduce it by 25mcg and see what happens. The doc may have increased your dose, but if it doesn't appear to be working for you, you can always knock it down a bit.

Remember that until they eveolved the TSH test about 50 years ago, they would treat on symptoms, not on the numbers.

Thanks for the responses. The last test didn't include FT4 or FT3. I have to wait until Tuesday to see my GP of choice and I will ask for full TFTs again then.

I am currently on 100mcg of levo which comes in one pill.

My SIS had an underactive Thyroid after the birth of her second DC, but her only symptoms were absence of periods.
She had everything tested tearly after that and one year she phoned me as her test results showed one was too high and one was too low.
It transpired she was over dosed, even though she noticed no change at all, and had her dosage reduced.
This was after her GP said the results were fineHmm
She did have her T4 and T3 tested, and I think it was the T4 that was too high but can't remember which was too low.

Thanks Digerd!

I will persist with the GP. The one I will see next week is the only one who managed to diagnose my hyperthyroidism after three others told me it was anxiety.

I have had very similar symptoms including work stress! Just got dose reduced to 75mg from 100 and do feel it has helped, though I have also used beta blockers occasionally and just got to the end of a stressful week. It is hard to know what is causing symptoms I think but pretty sure I was over medicated and the blood test eventually confirmed that too. Hoping I will feel more normal in next few weeks...
