Measles!

DD 16 mths has measles, nearly confused it with horrid teething, as she has been getting all 4 molars too, but today she got the rash and been to Docs got the mouth spots too, textbok in fact, conjunctivitis, dry cough the whole lot.
She is still poorly, very sleepy, not eating solds but drinking lots of her milk and the odd spoon of live yoghurt.
Having to ring everyone to tell them as its notifiable?
Wonder will they expect her to still have MMR, or whether just singles for mumps and rubella?

Hi Kiwisbird, we've been through this with DD. It's vital you ring anyone she's been in contact with, esp if she goes to nursery, mums and tots or whatever.

Your GP will undoubtedly still recommend MMR. It's possible that a single jab clinic will agree just to give mumps and rubella if you can provide a copy of her notes. DD not vaccinated so we didn't look into this.

Hope she gets well soon.

Yes have done some ringing around already.
Most worried about my older son who is unvaccinated as he had anaphylactic reaction to MMR (hes now 10) and expelled the vaccine.
Thanks for the info

They'll still want to give her the MMR. There was a little girl at ds' old nursery that had measles and one of the others (rubella I think? Memory fails now, this was last year some time) within the space of a few months of each other and she was still recommended the MMR. They were worried with the rubella that she had only had it midly and wouldn't be enough to protect her.

Hope she gets better soon and that your son will be unaffected. hugs

have you had your son tested? He may have immunity anyway.

Give both children vitamin A (not carotene). You can get it in fish liver oils. Don't give too much or for too long though as it can be toxic in very high doses. It's been shown to be very effective at reducing measles complications and measles itself.

Jimjams · 16/02/2004 13:29

they always recommend the MMR as their is no other choice officially. Having measles gives far better protection than the MMR though. They can't give singles as they can only be bought privately. Unless reading your name you're in NZ where it might be different!

kiwisbird · 16/02/2004 13:32

DD is already on fish ols thx jimjam got that from one of the other older threads, cheers, whats the reasoning behind it>
Son is def not immune, he is too rubella (oddly) but not to mumps or measles,
DD was schedulaed to have hers in hosp as they worry same reaction, she may now get singles if she is proved immune as risk of reaction is very high.
Who knows!
Thanks everyone so much so far

no am in Uk!
Will happily pay for singles. Would like her immunity to be tested first though etc
Ahh the minefield of parenting choices!

has to be fish liver oils- not the normal stuff you give. You need vitamin A which is in fish liver (or any other liver come to that if you can get her to eat liver and kidney or somethig- I would imagine she doesn't want to eat much though). if you are bfeeding you could take cod luver oil capsiles yourself and your milk will then contain more vit A.

kiwisbird · 16/02/2004 14:32

She does eat liver but not at moment as she is well off her food.
She has addition of cod liver oil in her diet for a heart condition
Hope this helps! She seems to like the oil, bizarre child!
