Hi All

I just wondered whether anyone has had anything like this before??

Basically about a year ago I started experiencing irregular bleeding, painful sex plus bleeding after sex. I also had heavier periods and lower back ache and period pain 60/70% of the time. I had blood tests, urine samples, a smear test and an internal scan about 5 months ago and apart from having a, ‘slightly enlarged womb’, there was nothing found. 3 months ago I had the Mirena coil fitted for my heavy, irregular periods however I had it removed a week ago due to almost constant period paid and painful sex. A few days before removal I was doubled over in pain after having sex. The doctor had examined where the coil was and said it was fitted correctly before I asked for it to be removed. She examined my abdomen and said she could feel a small lump in my lower right side. She said it could be a cyst but also asked me to do a pregnancy test in case it could have been an ectopic pregnancy. It came back negative. As did the swab she did in case of infection. I have another internal scan booked for this Thursday to try and find out more. I thought the coil could be causing the painful sex but two days after removal we tried again and, sorry if TMI, but during the act I could feel a pain in my lower right side, almost as if he was prodding something that was stuck inside me?!

This has been going on for nearly a year now and I am so fed up. I know I won’t find out for sure until Thursday but has this happened to anyone before? Btw I’m 41 and have two children aged 9 and 4.

Many thanks

Deep pain during sex can be very indicative of endometriosis being present as is severe period pain. If this is present it is usually only diagnosed by keyhole surgery (laparoscopy); scans and blood tests do not detect it if it is there.

I would ask the GP to refer you to a gynae anyway and particularly if a further scan does not reveal anything.

Well I had a scan on Thursday and they have found a dermoid cyst (she thinks) on my right ovary. It wasn't there 5 months ago and is now 6cm. I've got private health with work and am seeing a gynae Friday :(

It sounds as if the tests they ran a year ago would have excluded the worrying diagnoses. At you age, as well as endometriosis, adenomyosis is a possibility (would account for an enlarged uterus and heavy, though not irregular bleeding).

It's quite possible that you've developed a cyst, fibroids or polyps since the last round of tests. Whatever it is, I hope they find a proper cause.
