Experiences of rosacea treatments - Anyone???

Hi,

Having recently been told I have rosacea (mine is more of a fine pimply rash type over my forehead, nose and inside cheeks) I was wondering if anyone can post their experiences of treatment for it?
Tried one antibiotic which whilst it worked well, gave me side effects - lost some hair, had sores on lips and spots on neck (oxytetracycline). Then tried erthyromycin which didn't really work for me but didn't give me the horrible side effects either!!! I just can't win!!!
Am off to the doctors again tomorrow hopefully - anyone have any other suggestions?

TIA

Doxycycline worked for me.

Thanks - How long did you have to take it for? And did you notice any side effects from it?

I have been prescribed Metrosa (Metronidazole) which improved things almost immediately. I no longer look as though I have sunburn / a streaming cold or alcohol over indulgence.

Thanks AndiRee that's what I am thinking of asking for a gel to try, I seem to get every side effect going with antibiotics. How long did it take to see the effects?? And do you just apply it to the affected areas?? Soooo many questions!!!

Hi, the redness reduced significantly within a couple of hours of the first application. Mine is more prominent on my nose but has been known to appear on my cheeks and forehead on occasions. Applied only on affected areas. Initially I followed the directions but found over time my skin became dry and peeled off like sunburn, especially on my nose, so I reduced number of applications and applied more moisturiser. (Thought it was dried gel at first rather than actual skin) Now I only apply the gel when I notice the redness is back. No other side effects to report.

My mum has Rosacea too (Thanks mum I am blaming you!) and I made her try a bit on one cheek only. Within 30 mins, there was a marked redness reduction on that side.

Tis good stuff!

Wow that is quick!!! Do you think it will help on the pimples? Mine is like a really fine red spotty rash. Though I have to look closely to see the actual spots, they are almost pinhead sized (thankfully).
To think I thought that once I got into my thirties my skin would FINALLY settle!! Still there is much worse to be had I suppose, it's just frustrating finding something that works!!

The doxycyline made me feel sick, but only if I took it on an empty stomach. Absolutely fine if I took it at meal times.

Go to your GP and ask them to prescribe Rozex, its a cream and it takes a while to see improvement.

I feel for you: I've been suffering with this for the last 5 years and its driven me crazy. Didn't have much luck at the GP or hospital dermatologist; so I went private on Harley St ( after seeing an episode of embarasing bodies). The consultant helped with the infection ( not cured), and then used a fine laser to cauterise some of the blood vessels to reduce the redness.
It was expensive, and it hasn't really cured the spots problem, although the redness is noticeably reduced.

He's clearly very knowledgeable, and prescribed 'skinoren' cream which contains azelaic acid; helps clear out the blocked pores.
after that he tried isotretinoin gel which seems to peel off the top layer of your skin.
the he tried fucidin cream
and then rosex.

The pharmacist recommended metronidazole gel as someone else mentioned, although I haven't tried that one.

Skinoren works a bit for me, and now I get my GP to prescribe it, cuz its cheaper that way. Wink

And,
I've just tried baking soda toothpaste overnight

It seems to have worked a miracle. Grin

I've been on metrosa gel for a red nose and pipples on my nose, I look like an old drunk😒 can't say it's looking any better, infarct it's worst.

Seaweed42 · 16/01/2019 12:31

How long have you been using it for? It takes a couple of months to work.

Bexterw21 · 17/01/2019 06:47

Hi thx for replying.
I've been using it for two weeks of the 8 weeks my doctor has asked me to use it. My nose is redder with more bumps than ever.
Prior to this I was on a month if steroid cream. Although my nose was red/few pipples it definitely wasn't as inflamed.

I work in customer services and just know everyone is looking at me.

Btw I'm of on holiday and need suncream, any advice?

Soolantra, ivermectin cream. Amazing! Someone on here recommended it to me and the GP prescribed it and it’s changed my skin.

Bexterw21 · 18/01/2019 21:30

Thx..is that in the UK?

Stopped using metrosa for 24 hours and nose has calmed . Got a GP appointment on monday.emotionally drained

NotquitewhatImeant · 20/01/2019 13:03

Yes, in the UK. Amazing stuff, I can’t remember who recommended it on here but I would hug them! Hope things improve for you OP, it’s miserable when it flares. I was too embarrassed to go out a few times when mine was bad.
