struggling with flixotide inhaler

Been getting a lot of sore throats since been on it and have only just linked this as being the reason why.

I usually take them before brushing my teeth - does this not count as rinsing my mouth - do I need to do more?

I feel like I have tonsillitis all the time...I have no tonsils anymore. It is a constantly aware of my throat feeling. Tongue a bit odd too.

Dropping it not really an option as already on a lot of other meds and need them all to keep me "ok" at best.

Do you need to take it in flixotide form (if I remember rightly the powder form little blisters on a disk?)? Could you take it in ventolin aerosol form instead (maybe with a spacer to ensure you get the full dose)?

If you have to keep this type rather than immediately brush your teeth, maybe swill water around the mouth and gargle straight after, then brush. It's definitely something you can discuss with your GP.

Yes is an evohaler - same as ventolin.

Have flixotide and seretide that way. And Spiriva is with the wee capsules that you put in and puncture.

I think I need to get a spacer - only used to use them when bad but now have a home neb I use that. So will ask GP for one.

Might try gat an appointment and ask GP to look at troat check its not something else. Will try the gargle thing for next few days too.

Thanks.

It's worth looking into with the GP. From what I remember in my early days of diskhalers it was given to me because as a child I was likely to get the full dose sucking in the powder. Because asthmatics are notorious for not taking aerosol ventolin style inhalers incorrectly a spacer would help ensure you get the full dose.

My seretide is an accuhaler which is a powdery form and I can sometimes taste it but it has never given me a sore mouth or throat. I take seretide 100 - if you're on a higher dose (I think they go up to 250) that could maybe be a reason.

Don't know, definitely worth speaking to the GP.

seretide and flixotide are both 250 x2 morning and night.

I am not very good with the accuhaler. I ended up spitting out all the powder and choking when I tried it and the resp nurse was like Hmm

Although on every hosp admission I do get my technique checked and am told it is good but yes think I need a spacer again...maybe even a kiddie teddy one Wink

Yeah you're taking loads more than me. I'm 100 once daily. You're taking 1000 daily. So maybe it is all affecting your mouth. Smile. Accuhaler is easy, just suck innit! Wink. Ask for them to try some different methods of delivery.

Use a spacer please! Make sure you rinse loads too, flixotide, like most inhalers can cause oral thrush, so might be worth getting checked for that with your gp xx

Hello Giraffes Smile
It could be thrush - is it worse in the evening and when you wake up? Do you do a lot of throat clearing? These are both signs that I've got thrush even before I can see any white stuff in my throat. Do all the usual helpful things like using a spacer, rinsing/brushing teeth afterwards etc. However, I now find I have a big tendency to getting thrush even after doing all the right stuff and I tend to use Nystan fairly constantly. It sucks, but the alternative it that I find myself avoiding using adequate steroid to prevent throat problem. Then my chest is vulnerable. It really sucks.Hmm Get it checked out, but then do anything you can to prevent thrush starting. MPD xx

Oh, and IME the best spacer is the big clear plastic Allen&Hanburys Volumatic. It's huge and not very handbag-friendly, but you don't have that stupid 'tooting horn' thing in it (yes, I know it's supposed to help - its still feckin annoying!!) but you can just breathe normally and easily with it. Very useful if you are a big poorly - less effort. MPD xx

I was on both those inhalers you mentioned for asthma and had the same symptoms as you which probably was mild oral thrush. The doctr then switched me to Symbicort and ever since I've had no problems, no sore throats.
Btw, always gargle after regardless of the teeth brushing.
