Dizziness on standing up ...

NotQuiteCockney · 22/06/2006 14:37

I know it's trivial, but it's really winding me up. I keep having very dizzy spells on standing up. Once, this morning, my vision pretty much entirely went.

I've had this before, but only right after giving blood, or while pregnant in v. hot weather.

What causes this? How can I fix it? Is it simply a question of not eating and drinking enough? (I am not eating enough, I think I'm drinking enough. I'm not sleeping enough, either.)

It could be postural low blood pressure! I had it whilst I was pregnant - best to go to the docs though in case it could be something else.
It could be a number of things!

My mum had this turned out to be an irregular heart beat. They said if it got really bad she could have a pacemaker

Do you have high or low bp?

DebbsyandBibby · 22/06/2006 14:41

my guess blood pressure or ear infection starting.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/06/2006 14:42

Normal, I think. Used to be low when I was younger, don't think it's generally low now.

I'd like to try to eat a bit better (e.g. more, have been losing weight lately, haven't really thoroughly recovered from tummy bug of two weeks back. Keep thinking "ooh, I'll have ice cream" and then having an orange instead. Don't mind losing weight, exactly, but it's going a bit fast and weird.), and see if I can fix it myself before going to the medics ...

Not an ear infection, at least not labyrinthitis, I know what that feels like.

Postural hypotention ....low blood pressue. Check it out with the GP but chances are it is nothing and there is no treatment

NotQuiteCockney · 22/06/2006 14:46

But I can try to see if taking better care of myself for a week fixes it first? I don't want to go to the docs. Don't have time at the moment, anyway, crazy crazy week, and it's about to get worse.

Damn, I will have this same argument with DH, won't I. He didn't much like me going funny with this when pg. (Although, now that I think about it, going for a poo always sorted it . No idea why. I was nauseated too, and dizzy and felt faint.)

Anyway, it's not poo-related this time. I think.

make sure you are anot anaemic....that would make things worse, but there is no treatment if it is this. Not in the UK anyway. They do treat it in Germany. Don't quite know why there is a difference!

NotQuiteCockney · 22/06/2006 14:50

Unlikely I'm anaemic, although I have been craving molasses etc lately. Hmmm, I'm not low-energy, though, so prob not anaemic. Wait, there's iron in cabbage etc, right? If so, no way I'm anaemic.

could be sub-clinically anaemic. you could try drinking dilute acid like juice with iron-rich foods like spinach etc to improve absorption. i too have lowish bp and feel dizzy if eg i get up too quickly from hot bath.

biglips · 22/06/2006 14:57

is it while youre standing up or just stood up quickly?

NotQuiteCockney · 22/06/2006 15:05

Just stood up quickly. Well, a few seconds after. I can keep standing and am fine.

I think anaemia is unlikely, on reflection. My iron levels were comedy-high, apparently, the last time they were tested, when pg with DS2. Ok, I was mad for red meat while pg, and have it much less often now, but we eat only brown grains, lots of brocolli etc.

sounds very like postural hypotension to me, but I am not a doc

biglips · 22/06/2006 15:32

i get that too when i stand up too quick as the blood rushed to my head...

if you are concerned then get it checked out

Polgara2 · 22/06/2006 16:07

I get this, and my vision just goes completely black for a few seconds sometimes. Have had it as long as I can remember tbh. Have mentioned it a few times when being checked for other things, like migraines but nobody has ever been remotely bothered nor offered any explanation!! I do get low iron levels but only since my pregnancies and have had this longer. BP very very low during pregnancies too.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/06/2006 19:51

Ok, well, that's all very reassuring, thanks! I think I will try to take better care of myself and see what happens. DH is even being reasonably mellow about it, so I am not going to rush to the doctor's.

DD has postural hypotension - very scary for her the first time, when she was 13 - she just screamed "Mummy I've gone blind." It always comes on if she's got an infection and sometimes at other times - sometimes she faints, but she's now learned to recognise when it's coming & get her head down.Dr recommended regular carbohydrates, so if you've changed your diet a lot since your tummy bug, it might be one reason.
