Hi everyone,

I just found out I have hashimotos last week after feeling like total crap for a while and suffering awful hives and angioedema. Not sure of any levels as I have a follow up shortly. But in the meantime what the hell to do about the swelling of my face!?????? I am waking up every morning with a HUGE eyelid and / or lips!! I look like a monster. Cant go anywhere thats for sure. Will this stop when I begin the approp meds or are these just problems I have to learn to live with?? I would frighten small children if I went out with my face all crazy HELP

It should sort itself once you are properly medicated.

Where are you at in the process? Are you on meds yet?

Thanks guys.

Im not on any meds at the moment. I was just told over the phone by the allergy specialist what it was. In fact he knew the minute I entered the room what I had. My doc on the other hand says they dont treat it at this stage! I have news for him. I have been to neurologists, dermatologists, on antidepressants, sleeping tablets etc etc over the last couple of years and now I find out that all these ailments are part of the Hashis. I had bloods done before but not the thyroid ones that cover the antibodies. Only the allergy specialist bothered doing those ones and hey presto, theres the answer. All my doctor said was "dont worry about those elevated thyroid results, that just means you will have a few thyroid issues at some stage in your life". Yes, right about now!!

Am headed back to the specialist on the 26th of this month. Ive been doing a bit of reading up but still not sure what to ask to be put on. Im thinking he will head for one of the synthetic varieties. People are fine on those ones though arent they? I dont think we can get Nature Throid or Amour where I am.

No swelling this morning though :) YAY its going to be an outside day !!

Im in New Zealand now. I have only done a quick google of things and theres a swag of info out there to wade through. Have yet to decide what I definitely need to know / do and whats additional. Gluten free looks like what a lot of people suggest. I love my gluten! Eeekkkk. I just want to be on whatever works best for me and stops all this swelling!!! The specialist also heard a heart murmur too (which i have never had before) so Im waiting on a cardiologist appointment just to check it. Anyone else had this? Does this complicate things medicine-wise?

A heart murmur is usually caused by a heart valve not working properly. Your cardiologist will do an echocardiogram to diagnose the problem. It can be a very slight murmur and nothing to worry about. I have a moderate one.
It can make a difference to the amount of Thyroxine you have.
My GP will not increase my dosage because of that and I take 50 mcs daily.
Good luck

Does anyone have the thyroid bulgy eye thing with Hashimotos? One of my eyes is a bit scratchy and seems a bit bigger then the other? I thought it was just Graves that this was a potential problem with but apparently not when i read up on it? Thanks

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2005 and despite various doses I've never felt well at all. The medication has made no difference to me.

Turns out I'm deficient in vitamin D3 and calcium after recent blood tests. I reckon I've been like this for years now...explains many of my symptoms.

IrnBruTheNoo · 28/12/2013 15:52

There is a strong link between Hashimoto's and vitamin D deficiency. It's like an epiphany! Why did no one tell me all this years ago?!
