Fuck. I have a lump

Trotted off to the doctors earlier in the week as had a bit of sticky discharge from my nipple and it just felt a bit odd. Doctor did an examination. She asked me if I did check myself regularly (which I do) and then said she thought she could feel a lump. I had a feel and said no, that part always feels like that. She said she would refer me to be on the safe side but it could take a number of weeks as she didnt feel there was anything to be concerned about. I was quite happy about this.
Anyway, yesterday I was having another feel (paranoid!) and then I realised that the place she had queried with me definitely did have a lump. So I went back to see her this evening and she had another feel, and confirmed that yes that was a lump and she'd like to refer me to the "fast track clinic". Gulp. She was really nice but in no way reassuring because she didnt say "oh don't worry I don't think it will be anything serious" or something like that. So now I'm shitting myself.
Anyone have positive stories? I think it's the fast track bit that has made me nervous.

handbags I don't mind at all about the thread hijack- there sadly seems to be a number of us in this together. Will be sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers at 1pm. Will be off to work then so will check back later tonight to see how you got on. Keep us posted if you can x

I'm back. Well good and bad news I guess. It's definitely a tumour of some description, this was confirmed by mammogram and ultrasound. It appears though that it's small as is localised so can be removed with a lumpectomy. I also had biopsies and cells taken from my armpit and the results from these will confirm what the growth is and what the treatment will be. The cells will also confirm if it has spread.
So in some ways I feel relieved that I know what it is and it appears to be treatable. I obviously still need to wait for the work up of the biopsy results. I'm not shaking anymore at least. Although my boob is now throbbing where the biopsies were taken.
I am now going out with my DH and DCs and I may well get sloshed.

AFingerofFudge · 20/09/2013 18:19

Cant hang around now but thinking of you and hope you get answers quickly- did they say how long it would take?
Be back later x

Digerd "Cancerous breast lumps do not appear overnight. I woke up one morning with a large, very painful swelling in my left breast.
I knew it wasn't cancer, and was confirmed by my gyny the next day."

Joined to mention that this is not true. I am thrilled that your overnight lump was a cyst. However, I had the same experience of a lump appearing overnight, also thought it was a cyst, but it turned out to be an aggressive 5 cm cancerous tumour appearing in 10 hrs., which had a friend within the few days and shed into 4 nodes by the time I got it US/mammogramed less than a week later. I too thought overnight meant a cyst not cancer, but these very aggressive tumours do happen, especially in younger women. My experience isn't typical, but they do happen an better safe than sorry....

UKsounding · 20/09/2013 18:31

Meant - joined to mention that it is not necessarily true that cancerous breast lumps do not appear overnight.
I am not suggesting that Digerd was not telling the truth Confused

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/09/2013 20:26

handbags skip to tamoxifen -we'll look after you..

hellymelly · 20/09/2013 23:04

I agree with UK, as I have a friend with inflammatory breast cancer, which appeared v. quickly and was mistaken for mastitis at first. It is a rarer cancer but aggressive and it isn't unusual for it to appear overnight, so always get checked however sudden the lump or swelling.
Handbags- sorry it wasn't better news, but sounds as good as it can be under the circs. My friend mentioned above has a v. aggressive tumour, three lumps in the breast, one very large indeed, and lumps in the armpit, so all pretty bad, and yet she is responding really well to the chemo regime. It is all looking very positive. The treatments for breast cancer - if yours is malignant- have come on so far . I know two other women who have had breast cancer, one five years ago (mastectomy, no chemo, she is fine). One in her 20's two decades ago (again, she had surgery but is fine, two babies since then).

sorry Brew. Or even Wine

AFingerofFudge · 23/09/2013 21:57

Thankyou helly. Am a bag of nerves but am relieved the waiting is nearly over because it's doing my head in!!

Waiting is the worst bit I am sure. If they do a biopsy there is another wait for the results, but still a good chance they will come back fine. Really wishing you a good result tomorrow. I was a sobbing wreck the night before my last check, and it was all fine, hope you get the same.

digerd · 24/09/2013 07:52

I should have said it is rare that a cancerous tumour appears overnight.
UK I did not infer you had Smile. My gyny told me that.

DD also had a walnut sized lump appear and had it out, but was only a large cyst.

handbags Sorry it is cancer, but does appear it is in the early stages if just a lumpectomy is anticipated. The biopsy can tell what type it is and the stage it is at. < learnt all that from DH's cancer specialist>
Good luck.

OP. Good luck for today and hope you slept well last night.

RibenaFiend · 24/09/2013 08:24

I have just checked my breasts thanks to this thread and will be kicking myself to be doing it more regularly.

Good luck to both Handbags and AFinger.

handbagsatdawn · 24/09/2013 12:40

Fudge am hoping you now have news and that it's good.

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2013 15:23

Am back, and the news is good. After lots of umming and aaahing I was sent for a mammogram, then some more umming and aaahing and I had an ultrasound and then they declared all was ok!
I am so relieved, so so relieved as I was majorly bricking it and imagining the worst. The wait was horrible but thankfully the outcome good.
Handbags thinking of you and hoping for the best news. Keep us posted xx

Hey Fudge I have just let out a huge sigh of relief for you. Thank goodness for that, I'm so pleased it was all ok. Did they say what the lump was?

hellymelly · 24/09/2013 16:06

I am delighted for you. I just checked in to see if you had posted. You can celebrate tonight! What a relief.

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/09/2013 16:28

hooray fudge !!!

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2013 16:52

Hooray indeed. Have celebrated by darkening the door of Waitrose (no less) and buying allsorts of treats- including some roses. (The flowers not the horrible chocolates!)
Slightly concerned that it was a medical student who told me it was her first day in a clinic that read the results of the mammogram. I presume the qualified consultant looked at it too! But anyway, I'm just getting paranoid, I'm sure it's fine.
Thank you to all who have shown concern- I find it really hard to show emotions in RL and so have been very blasé with DH and the few friends I had told. It's been great to have MN!
So handbags lots of support and positivity heading your way too xSmile
