Sertraline has done something to my jaw

TwinsetandPearls · 21/06/2006 22:49

I have had my sertraline upped from 50mg to 100mg and for two days now have had a banging head, nausea and a really heavy pain in my jaw.

Hvae phoned my doctor and he told me to persevere for a few more days and see if it improved.

Has anyone else had pain in their jaw and how long did it last?

It says some discomfort in the joints- I suppose the jaw is a joint.

The Doctor said it was a side effect so I don;'t think I am a medical freak just wanted to know if it was going to last much lonoger.

Thanks, I had a day off work today and really need to be back in on Friday.

I have tried other AD's and had hot flushes, the shakes and nausea but never a sore jaw! Most bizzarre.

Jaw-clenching, also known as bruxism, is a known side-effect of SSRIs including sertraline. I didn't have jaw pain, per se, but I had the constant clenchingannoying as hell. I'd guessthough I don't know for sure--that your jaw pain would be a version of bruxism? Should pass as your body adjusts to new dose, but might not. . .in which case your doc might well take you off the drug. But he's right to say wait and see.

TwinsetandPearls · 22/06/2006 00:28

Thanks medea I am clenching my jaw a lot and it is annoying!

have just seen your previos thread about serraline and that is exactly how I feel including the vertigo feeling.

Unfortunately I'm someone who can't tolerate SSRIs at all. But that's quite rare. How long have you been on them? Impossible to say how long the pain will last, but I'd imagine under a week. . .Sorry to hear you're having a bad time of it.

TwinsetandPearls · 22/06/2006 00:54

I ahve been on it for about nine months but they have not been working so the doctor has just upped my dose. I can remember not feeling great when I started but not as bad as this.

hi there, sorry you are having this bother with your ADs.
I used to get very sore knees when the dose was upped on sertraline, which was the 'joint pain' side effect - it lasred for a few days adn something anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen - or my doc gave me voltarol) worked pretty well. It was the only side effect I ever had until I had an overwhelming bad reaction (serotonin syndrome) last summer and now cant tolerate them at all - luckily I am well now anyway.

Here's hoping you feel better soon, both from the sore jaw and the depression.

Thanks I will report it.

Sore knees! Even more bizarre than a sore jaw.

sorry for little hijack
medea - what is it about SSRI's that you cant cope with? Eventually mine were actually exacerbating the depression and I landed in hospital after a suiceide attempt which hit me out of the blue (fine one minute, overdosing and cutting wrists within 6 hours - totally weird but recognised occasional side effect of all SSRIs). Well, I thought it was out of the blue (seemed like it to me) but turned out I had been having mild symptoms for a month, which suddenly just exploded.
I'll never be allowed an SSRi again and sometimes wonder what I will get if I ever do get depressed again (long history of it) - dont want tricyclics as get so sleepy and so many of the other drugs are so very new I worry about them.
How are you - are you still unwell or better now?

And TSP - how is your Jaw today?

VVVQV · 23/06/2006 00:44

Agree that you should give it about 2 weeks TaP.

Mine was upped from 50 to 100 5 weeks ago. I got the "squeak" back in my ear again (sounds odd but maybe you know what i mean?), and dull headache. BUT there has been some weird virus going round that involves headaches and nausea so that might have been part of it.

Other than that, i can honestly say that within a week of the dose being upped i felt so so so much better. I feel the same as i used to before i got pnd. In fact, i feel pretty good.

Fingers crossed it does the same for you too.

xxx

Hi harrisey, what you describe sounds truly awful--very sorry to hear that. Nothing like that for me: my problem with SSRIs (and even the second-line drugs that are only part-SSRI, like efexor) is that the side-effects never go away, no matter how low a dose I start on, or how slowly the dose is increased. The side-effects actually increase over time, for me. And the drugs don't seem to help. (Both problems are apparently rare, twinset, not to worry.)

The consensus is that I'll inevitably relapse & should be medicated now in some fashion. But I'm resistant to the idea of meds (having found them so intolerable in the past) so I'm very naughty and have ignored my newest prescription, which I've carried around for a few months now: a drug called lamotrigine, used to treat bipolar disorder (which I seem to have, mildly). I've been feeling well for a few months now; if and when I relapse, I'll probably get the motivation to start it, which I know is ridiculous, as it takes a few months to start working. What's your treatment now that SSRIs have been ruled out, harrisey?

TwinsetandPearls · 23/06/2006 18:15

Hace spoken to doctor and he advised splitting the tablets and aving 50mg in the morning and 50mg in the evening. No more pain in the jaw but I am aware that I am clenching my jaw a lot. Other than that feel fine thanks

I am sorry you have been having problems with your AD's I think I am in the last chance saloon as I think I have tried most SSRIs and the odd tricyclic although as harrisey said they make you so tired.

TSP glad to hear you are feeling better.

Medea, at the moment I am medication free! When they took me off the Lustral last summer I bounced back adn my psychiatrist suggested a month with no meds to clear out my system adn see how I did, adn I'm great. I occasionally see my CPN for a chat, just to check I am still getting on OK, but I am.
Psych says if I get ill again I will be prescribed mirtazapine. Its one of the newer drugs, but also has sleepy side effects, adn as I have 3 kids of 6, 4 and 2 I cant afford to be any sleepier than I am at the moment!
I suppose I'm kind of burying my head in the sand and hoping it wont happen! Things are all up in the air round here at the mometn as I am moving house in 6 weeks, starting a new college course and sitting entrance exams. But I am coping fine. I'm really proud of myself!!

Medea · 24/06/2006 11:32

That's really good news harrisey. Best of luck with upcoming changes/events.

Twinset, glad to hear the pain is gone. . .hope the clenching starts to alleviate soon too.

Bennomate · 08/03/2019 21:15

I’ve been on sertraline for the past 5 months, and today I had my dose increased, my jaw keeps clenching I feel extremely nauseous. 😷

MomPJ · 05/11/2019 05:52

harrisey what was the "month of symptoms" that lead to the suicide attempt. that is truly terrifying. and how old were you? I heard this is mostly a side effect in young adults.

LadyJim · 23/11/2020 22:58

I have just had my dose of Sertraline increased and I have a really saw jaw, does anyone know if this is a thing?!

LadyJim · 23/11/2020 23:03
