Antibiotics and stomach ache

I've been put on Erythromycin for forever a few months for adult acne but it is not agreeing with my stomach at all; I seem to have constant stomach ache and nausea, I don't know whether I'm hungry or not, and I generally feel crap. Might come off them.

Can anyone suggest something to help calm my stomach? I've read yoghurt is good but it's only having a limited effect at the moment.

Thanks :(

Sometimes they tell you that it will improve after a day or two, I feel for you, it's horrible isn't it.

If you experience any other severe symptoms, let them know - yoghurt is the only thing I can think of, really, or some people take pills with a piece of soft bread or something. Anything that gives your stomach a bit of cushioning.

Good luck x

Hi I understand how you feel, I finished a course of antibiotics the other day, I was on two different antibiotics, amoxicillin and metronidazole, both of which were a high dose. I felt crap the whole week, nausea, stomach ache, bloated and a constant metallic taste in my mouth, I did try yoghurt but it didn't help me, but it might help you.
Before I took the antibiotic I made sure I had something to eat, otherwise I probably would have been sick. Hope you feel better soon.

Erythromycin is awful, I have to take it occasionally as I am allergic to pencillin I felt so ill on it and it messed my bowels up. Now I ask for clarithromycin it is much easier on my tummy, still not nice but bearable - not sure if that is an alternative to treat your condition though?

Make sure you have food in you when you take them too.

Am on clarithromycin - had major diarrhoea earlier! Hope it passes Blush

lots of water.
it will dilute what's in your stomach and flush out the antibiotics.

Clarithromycin and erythromycin are both evil on your stomach and I'm allergic to penicillin so limited what I can take. Didn't find anything that helped it feel better sorry

Another penecillin allergy here , that Erythromycin is evil .

I found nibbling on those little hard dry salty pretzels ( apparently starch helps slow diarrhea ) helped with diarrhea ,but you don't want to go to much the other way !

Take dioralyte or make up your own from internet instructions as if you have diarrhea your electolytes will be well out of kilter .

In past I have found pro biotics helpful and these in particular to be worth the high price www.amazon.co.uk/Udos-Choice-Super-8-Probiotics/dp/B0036E5KG6/ref=sr_1_1/276-3779083-6582765?ie=UTF8&qid=1379229920&sr=8-1&keywords=probiotics+udo

Finally dont forget GP can prescribe anti sickness meds which will help with nausea and that low level debilitating feeling of " am I feeling sick or hungry ,my tummy hurts "

Good luck .

My worst AB was Metronidazole, which I have refused to take again- lost half a stone in 10 days despite the course being for 5. Felt sea sick.
2 years ago I was given Clarithromycin and told by the chemist to take them with lots and lots of water to avoid tummy upsets. I did and all was fine.
