the mother of all nappy rashes

21 mnth old DD has come up with the worst nappy rash I have ever seen. It's very red and raised not blistering but not far off I think, have recently moved so can't see a gp and went to boots to get advice - was told to try canestan cream as it could be thrush related. Have been using sudacream and the other yellow thick one in between changes, am changing her often but she gets really upset when I try to change her as it obviously hurts, am using warm water and cotton to clean her and no nappy as much as possible.

I think it's getting worse - any suggestions welcome, it's killing me to see her in so much pain.

Register with a local gp and take her? Do you have a walk-in centre you can get to? Phone NHS Direct, explain the situation and see what they come up with? If all else fails take her to A&E?

How long have you been trying to get rid of it? It can sometimes take a few days. But if after a couple of days there was no improvement at all then I would look for advice. If you've persevered with frequent changing, canestan, metanium and others then maybe it's time to have it looked at.

is she teething? if it's ateething nappy rash it can take ages to shift. you need thingumy cream - the really thick stuff (the name will come to me in a min) and you need to leave her nappy off as much as poss. It could be thrush I guess but it sounds like ds's nappy rash to me.

oh right - sudocrem is the one I meant. what is the yellow cream - could that be making it worse?

popsycal · 21/06/2006 19:54

ds2 had an awful rASH WHICH GOT INFECTED AND THE DOC GAVE USE A FANTASTIC CREAM CALLED TIMO-SOMTHING

popsycal · 21/06/2006 19:54

METANIUM IS THE YELLOW ONE I THINK....

SenoraPostrophe · 21/06/2006 19:55

also have you used both of those creams before? she could be allergic to one of them.

Olihan · 21/06/2006 20:00

I've found that sudocrem makes nappy rah on ds worse. Metanium spread quite thinly has cleared up some horrendous teeting rashes within 2 - 3 days. but I think you're doing all the right things and it might just need a couple of days to start clearing. My ds had some horrible nappy rashes at that sort of age, mainly when his bigger teeth were coming through.

make really strong chammomile tea add a couple of drops of tea tree oil and lavender, and when you change your baby wash her with the tea and let her air dry. It might sound slightly barmy but works amazingly.

Turtle35 · 21/06/2006 20:19

I have used Mitanium and Sudacream before and they both seem to have worked well in the past, I have been trying the mixture with Canestan for 3 days now and it doesn't seem to be getting better, what makes this complicated is we are moving to the US in 2 weeks that is why I am not registering with another GP but I suppose I could try and find a private clinic where we are staying, it's London so it shouldnt' be too difficult to find just costly!.

I have heard camomile tea is good but think she made need something stronger, however I will try anything to soothe until I can get to a dr.

thanks everyone

Mmmmm, i found experimenting with the creams never helped. I stuck with sudocream and if you dont see an improvement in 2 to 3 days go see a doctor. Most surgeries will let you walk in until you can get registered and even more so with a tiddlypeep

Lact8 · 21/06/2006 20:31

I found ds2 had terrible rash from teething and I swear the only thing that cleared it up was talc, none of the creams seemed to make any difference. He is a big wee-er anyway and i think he was always damp down there so the talc helped that. It usually cleared within 24 hrs.

(but think I remember something about not using talc on girls?? I think its a case of making sure it is only applied externally)

Turtle35 · 21/06/2006 20:48

I too have heard not to use talc powder, thought it had something to do with them ingesting it? not sure though

I will def take her to see a gp tomorrow.

popsycal is it timodene? dd had really bad nappy rash all the time and dr prescribed that stuff and another really thick cream called conotrane both were excellant and cleared it up in no time, timodene really stinks though and if you get it on anything white it can stain but the only stuff i found worked

popsycal · 22/06/2006 18:56

timodene that is theone - magic stuff
