I suffered with recurring bouts of cystitis about 4 years ago which all needed courses of antibiotics to get shot of, but have been clear since. Then today went from perfectly fine to pissing razor blades and bright red wee in about four hours. Gutted. Can someone please tell me that this is not the start of another few months of misery? It could just be a one off right? Feel free to lie to make me feel better.

I had to wee in the bath earlier to try and combat the 'ol razor blades and actually little lumps of blood came out. It was scary. This is normal right?

I think you should ask to be referred to a specialist, there may well be an underlying cause which is easily fixed, that's what happened in my case. It's a miserable thing to have and your doctor should really be referring you anyway if you have recurring bouts. Thanks

Thanks lets, what kind of specialist would that be? I don't recall a referral ever being mentioned when I was suffering from it for months four years ago, seemed more a case of reluctantly dishing out the antibiotics every time...

Hmmm, I can't remember - is it maybe a urologist? You definitely need to get seen if it's instantly getting so bad that you're peeing blood. The solution to mine was really simple and I wished it had been done years before. I'll pm you about it as I'm too embarrassed to say in public :0)

Ah thanks, that would be appreciated!

Have you got antibiotics yet?
Get a urine sample even if it's in a sterilised jam jar and get yourself to the GP.
Then take paracetamol, drink a pint of water, get some Cranberry juice, try a hot water bottle and get some of those sachets for symptomatic relief.
Have had this on/ off for the last year virtually. See if if they will give you a proper course of anti- biotics straight away. I found they want to give a three day course now which helps in the short term, but means it comes back straight away.

Sorry, posted before I meant to.
Wanted to send all my sympathy too.

Ah thanks for all the advice and sympathy (sympathy defo helping Smile. Got antibiotics this morning, and obviously, it is a three day course of trimethroprin. Poop. Do you think I should ask for more? Does appear to be working, bright red wee is now a much prettier shade of pink, razor blades have blunted somewhat. Arghhh, so annoyed, been four years free of it I don't want it back!!

Actually, I have some ciprofloxacin in the flat, would it be a good idea to take two or three days worth of that after the three days of trimethroprin, or is mixing a bad plan?

It would be a urologist you would be referred to. Sympathies

nadnadting · 12/09/2013 18:56

Blast, don't think I will make it to GP tomorrow to try and persuade him to write me another prescription. Might just have to go for the ciprofloxacin. I get really worried about doing the wrong thing and adding to antibiotic resistance!

longer prophylatic courses of abs are good if you have recurrent infections but usually 3 days is enough if it is a one off, there is only any point adding ciprofloxacin if the infection is proven to be resistant to the antibiotic you are already on and even then you would need a course not just 2 or 3 tablets.
Presumably a MSU has been sent for culture and sensitivities in which case you will know if the original Ab is the correct one.
