excessive drooling

my ds2 is 8 months old and has since he was about 2 months old had excessive drooling, he also has a constant runny nose and eyes. the drool is constant, so much so i have to change his tops 3 times a day, he has plenty of fluids (bf), hayfever does run in family, though i can't think what the triggers could be at this time of year and he has got 4 teeth through now. i was wondering if anyone else has had experience of this and any advice?

My friend's kid was a constant drooler... pretty funny, we thought. She didn't sort herself until about 1 yo.

My dd is only 8 months and her 2 teeth finally emerged, since they appeared she has been drooling as she never did before. I would say teething. Yours has 4, that may be why.

Apparently the drooling helps in this process.

Drooling and runny nose may well be an indication of an allergy. My son had this for nearly a year until he was finally diagnosed as having a milk allergy. The excess mucas causing the runny nose also led to him having severe glue ear as well.

Do consider whether there are other factors that might indicate allergies.

I was just about to ask the same question as you shrub. I have a 2 week old girl who is fantastic (sleeps right through, feeds well and is generally content). However, she is a constant dribbler - much much more than her sister ever was. Her clothes are constantly soaked and keeping her skin dry and free from red patches is a constant struggle. Her bedding needs changed after every sleep as the sheets are soaked through to the mattress in a huge puddle - also smells slightly vinegary if not changed within a few hours!! Is this really normal? Should I be taking her to a doctor to check it out? When does a bit of dribbling become something more worrying?
Interested in the allergy side of things - how do you go about getting this checked out without forking out hundreds of pounds down at the chemist with private testing?

see how continual her dribbling is - it made me type "constant" 3 times....

stripeymouse, very similar in that my ds1 never dribbled either and i now you mention it i have also noticed a vinegary smell with ds2, have tried trawling the net but can only find american pages where the doctors give steriod/anti-fungal creams for the rashes that the drooling causes under the chin. i have managed to get rid of the rash with organic 'weleda calendula nappy change cream' and still use it as a barrier, but like you i want to treat the cause. have also noticed slight improvement when i resort to a dummy - though i limit it to nightime. during the day i use a muslin square as a sort of neckchief to take the dribble but have found i am still changing them 3 times a day and they only come in white!!!! we wait in hope......
