Just been diagnosed with this and the doctor thinks it's primary rather than secondary which is good but he wants to keep an eye in case as some of my symptoms suggested more testing was needed.

So it's colder today and I got cold at work and now still can't warm up properly, have felt washed out all day and my fingers are stiff typing because I stupidly just started drinking a g and t and the cold of the glass has affected them. But I wonder how normal the feeling I'll thing is? I always feel very sleepy when cold.

Feeling ill that should say

If I get really cold, I get really tired. As in, when my hands and feet have gone completely white.

But, I read or saw somewhere that a drop in temperature is evolutionarily associated with evening, and triggers (er... bio knowledge & memory failing me) release of melatonin making you feel sleepy. Which is why bathing babies before bed helps them sleep (allegedly).

Or you could have a bit of a virus?

I have raynauds - not too badly though as generally only get affected in the winter. Have to always wear gloves once it gets colder as otherwise fingers go white and I am in a lot of pain. I don't tend to find the cold makes me tired though.

ILoveOnionRings · 06/09/2013 20:21

I have Raynaud's to, mainly in the winter but still some affects in the summer. I do get a bit miserable when cold but not necessarily tired.

I do watch the weather quite a lot now to try and be prepared for the dip in temperatures. Lots of layers helps and in the midst of winter thermals (top and bottom), tights, socks, gloves and hat.

Noteveryday · 06/09/2013 20:33

Agree with others it makes me very miserable but not tired. Have to prepare like old lady - cannot be caught without gloves. Once got caught out driving with the heating on full blast but hands would not bloody defrost - lethal.

Shivering a lot can tire me out but that doesn't happen often, where the white hands / feet thing can come with the tiniest drop in temperature.

Thanks everyone. My feet go very blue and that and the tiredness (sort of detached feeling) and pain are the worst bits for me. I do keel worrying it could be secondary as I keep getting mouth ulcers too.

Mine has been very noticeable this summer but I have always struggled with cold and pain in my hands and feet as an adult I t hi n k.

I need some nice warm gloves! Need to keep some by the fridge I think. Feel like people in rl think I am ott but I really can't deal with the cold, it hurts!

Makes sense about the evolutionary thing. It's as if my body can't cope so it shuts down a bit, can't concentrate ,feel light headed etc. It's horrible often happens on training events when I am having to sit still in a poorly heated room.

check your thyroid and check the results yourself - tsh below 2 ideally
sounds a bit hypothyroid

NanTheWiser · 07/09/2013 10:07

Also a small chance of pernicious anaemia - get some blood tests done.

used2bthin · 07/09/2013 19:08

Thanks I had blood tests a while back as thought I was anaemic and they tested my thyroid then too and all was ok but I didn't see the results.

I actually have a bit of a sore throat today so it seems I am coming down with something but it has reminded me I feel rough every winter! I am considering once a week Sun bed or something.

you can get your thyroid tested again, its possible it has worsened since, but ask what the results are too

idiot55 · 07/09/2013 21:28

My 4 year old has and I think there is a link between a flare up and tiredness.

Floralnomad · 07/09/2013 21:35

I have ad Raynauds for nearly 30 years ,when I was 20 it led to frostbite in 7 of my fingers . I find that it is related to stress so my first piece of advice is to try and control the stress levels and also not think about it too much as that may make it worse . Although gloves and socks are important I find that the most important thing is to wear a hat , I'm generally hatted up from September to April ( at least) ,if your head stays warm it really does help the rest of your body IMO.

How is Reynauds diagnosed? DS is 16 and used to be a 'hot' person, no matter what the temp would be in cut offs, have windows open etc.

For the last 3 years as soon as it is slightly cold he feels it. His hands and feet go blue, red and white, they actually hurt him. I've got him thermal gloves and socks, good coat (didn't wear one for years previously!).

His hands also go dry and scaly, in Winter he uses E45 hand wash and put E45 cream on everyday as it was recommended by the chemist.

She didn't mention taking him to the dr. Should I do so or is he just more susceptible to cold?

used2bthin · 07/09/2013 22:20

I went to my gp and he diagnosed me after looking at my feet. I am going back in three weeks to see if he wants more tests but it was fairly straight forward. I think there are medicines t hey can try if it gets worse.

I think stress is why it's flared up recently, I go a funny colour when upset and get the same tiredness so maybe my tiredness is related too.

Did you go during cold weather? DS has been fine all Summer. He does get very stressed over things but tends to be in the stomach area rather than hands and feet as far as I know.

mercibucket · 07/09/2013 22:53

you really need the blood tests tho, i had reynauds for years before it turned out i actually had a dodgy thyroid. thyroid treated, reynauds much better. i still get cold and lose a bit of feeling, but not like before
initially, the gp was happy enough to just give advice about gloves etc

used2bthin · 08/09/2013 07:33

I am going back to see if a referral is needed I think. Blood tests were done a couple of months ago, can things change quickly?

Caol, I have had it this summer despite the heat but mostly when in the shower or in the evenings. The tiredness is since the cold though and I am really noticing the lack of feeling and pain on touching cold things. It makes driving tricky in the mornings!

with hashimotos, it depends, as your tsh goes up and down. worse though, in the uk we just dont treat it when clearly abnormal. if its over 2.5, that is worth keeping an eye on.

used2bthin · 09/09/2013 12:59

Thanks I must make my follow up Dr appointment. It is freezing today I hate it! Must also get some decent slippers and get my boots out.
