Lump on Thyroid

Has anyone had one of these and lived to tell the tale?

maishoffwcingras · 06/09/2013 18:15

yes me. how big would you say it is?

paddyclampo · 06/09/2013 20:02

Thanks for the reply! About an inch diameter I think! I've already been to my GP and having a biopsy this week. Am assuming it is actually on my thyroid - it goes up and down when I swallow! Was your cancer?

I have a cyst on my thyroid, developed (or at least grew to the point that it was obvious) whilst i was pregnant. I had a scan and biopsy, all clear. Mine is about 4cm. Do you have any other questions, i am a bit of a pro on thyroid lumps?

paddyclampo · 07/09/2013 18:09

That's reassuring to hear TwentyTinyToes! Did your feel strange when you swallowed or could you just feel it from the outside? Was it an ultrasound scan you had?

OP posts:
mrsvandertramp · 07/09/2013 18:12

I have one too - it is about 30mm diameter, have had a couple of fnas - all clear so far. They offered me surgery to remove it, but I'm thinking that I'll just put up with it as long as it's harmless. My thyroid is slightly over active as well.

notJenkins · 07/09/2013 18:13

I had a thyroid nodule that turned out to be thyroid cancer. They kept telling me thyroid nodules are very common and everyone has one and they are hardly ever cancer.
When is your biopsy scheduled for ?

paddyclampo · 07/09/2013 18:54

It's on Wednesday!

mrsvandertramp Did they discover about the over active thyroid by doing bloods?

notjenkins Did you have your thyroid removed?

OP posts:
TwentyTinyToes · 07/09/2013 19:18

Had an ultrasound scan and then three FNA (two standard but second one was inconclusive so was repeated). I can feel it when i swallow but i don't notice it any more unless i think about it. I have been offered surgery but am going to leave it for now.

notJenkins sorry to hear yours turned out to be cancer, hope the treatment was/is ok.

Kbear · 07/09/2013 19:23

I had one - a multi-nodular goitre, they called it.

Had scans and three biopsies and although benign it was growing quite fast so had it removed, although with half my thyroid. I have a scar you would hardly notice and normal thyroid function over 10 years later.

mrsvandertramp · 07/09/2013 19:32

Yes blood tests showed my thyroid was overactive. The doctors are now thinking that they might give me radioactive iodine to sort that and hopefully shrink the lump too.

June2008 · 07/09/2013 21:42

I had a lump on my thyroid two years ago. I too had scans and biopsies. At its widest it was over 10cm and was pushing my trachea out of place. I hadn't noticed it, my gp picked up on it when I went to see her with a sore throat. I wasn't really given a choice and had it removed along with half my thyroid. I have quite a long scar but people hardly notice it due to its position. The remaining part of my thyroid is now not working properly so I take daily thyroxine. I lived to tell the tale!

paddyclampo · 07/09/2013 22:48

Thanks June2008 feeling much more reassured hearing of people who are still standing!

I had a goitre due to graves disease and nodules. I had my whole thyroid removed about 6 years ago, the op was fine, the scar is about 2 inches and nobody notices until I mention it. I have to take thyroxine but other than that I am fine. Good luck next week

digerd · 08/09/2013 07:57

When I was overactive my whole Thyroid swelled up and my eyes bulged. Had lost lots of weight and other nasty symptoms as was diagnosed very late.
I had the subtotal Thyroidectomy after treatment with carbimazole failed to cure it. My scar is 3.5 " long above my collar bone as my Thyroid was so enlarged, but no lumps.

SpanielFace · 08/09/2013 08:17

OP, I am currently waiting for a referral for a ultrasound-guided thyroid biopsy. I have a 2.9cm lump, and another smaller one, both on the right hand side. I'm quite nervous - I have had bloods done and have high thyroid antibodies, and borderline TSH, so have was started on thyroxine by my GP while awaiting referral. To begin with I wasn't seriously worried at all, my mum has an underactive thyroid & so I assumed I was developing the same, and I felt I had some of the symptoms. But having been referred for a scan, seen the consultant, had a camera down my throat, and now been re-referred for a biopsy, it's just started to dawn on me that maybe there could be more to it than I had initially assumed. Do you have your appointment through for your biopsy? Hope everything goes ok, sending positive thoughts.

paddyclampo · 08/09/2013 15:51

Going on Weds for a needle biopsy, not sure about any other type of scan as yet. Biopsy doesn't bother me in terms of having it done but don't fancy the camera up my nose!!!! Do they sedate you for that?

OP posts:
notJenkins · 08/09/2013 16:25

Yes I had my whole thyroid removed then radioactive iodine treatment.

Don't let my story scare you though as I kept being told thyroid lumps are very common and very rarely cancer. I was unlucky.

Worriedkat · 08/09/2013 16:44

notJenkins did you have any symptoms? Lymph nodes affected etc. was your lump big? I have an 8mm nodule but am worried as thyroid been underactive for many years and apparently this increases risk.

notJenkins · 08/09/2013 17:35

No symptoms at all. Nodule was 1.8 cm and I had 1 lymph node involved. No visible lump.

Worriedkat · 08/09/2013 17:47

It seems so indiscriminate :( I can't even get a 2 week referral for my nodule. The ultrasound deemed it not urgent enough. notJenkins How are you doing now?

notJenkins · 08/09/2013 18:03

I am ok waiting for a scan to see if I need more treatment.

My biopsy was done about 3 months after the initial ultrasound that found the nodule so a wait is usual.

I really don't want to worry though as your chances of cancer are very very low.

paddyclampo · 08/09/2013 18:39

I don't have any symptoms either. Am I right in thinking that success rates for treating thyroid cancer are very high notjenkins?

I only saw my GP last Weds and the biopsy is a week to the day. Am beginning to worry that my GP thinks i'm dying and this is why it's so fast! She said it was the two week rule that if anyone has a lump of any sort they need to see a consultant within 2 weeks.

I just got a call saying report to the ENT department, they would do a needle biopsy in the morning and in the afternoon I would see the consultant to discuss the results :S

OP posts:
digerd · 08/09/2013 19:09

Yes, Thyroid cancer is very easy to cure.

notJenkins · 08/09/2013 19:33

Yes very curable.

notJenkins · 11/09/2013 16:00

How did it go ?
