Thrush at every period

Since dc2 (10mo) I have been getting thrush mostly every time I take a period . The first one was a killer and the thrush was terrible . When he was 4mo I decided to get the mirena back in as that stopped my period the last time. But 6 months later I'm still having heavy periods and getting thrush every time .

I'm toying with the idea of ggetting the mirena out but I know I will end up pregnant (I will be to lax as I would like another child but its just not the time)

I used to get this - for years - and in my case it seemed to be because the pH of the vagina changes when you have a period and becomes a much more favourable environment to the yeast that cause thrush.

Though there are many supposed causes and remedies for thrush, if it recurs with every period and is very hard to shake it is likely to be because your body has become a bit of a haven for it. Are you eating too much sugar/simple carbs like white bread, pasta etc.? Candida albicans loves this sort of diet.

I gave up sugar and simple carbs completely for a month or two about ten years ago. This killed off the candida, which has only come back about twice, and each time it cleared up with meds, which it had stopped doing before I ditched the sugar. I would also recommend the section in Boots where you get vaginal shower gels/wipes that include lactic acid. Not only very soothing, but potent against candida.

Definitely eat to many carbs . I could easily live on bread and pasta . Have recently switched to all brown though since ds been diagnosed with chronic constipation so hopefully that may help a bit .

I'm really toying with the idea of getting rid of the mirena . I love it as a form of contraception but the first time I got it in my periods were gone within 6 months and didn't appear again until I got it out to ttc . This time it doesn't seem to be agreeing with me the same . I've now had my period for over a week still bleeding fresh red blood and had thrush this whole time !! ConfusedConfused

Sadly, just switching to brown won't reduce your carbs. I had constant thrush, always around my period, for years. It's horrible, and I completely empathise/sympathise with you.

For me, being on the pill was a big part of it, and so it was a key reason for DH having his vasectomy!

But diet is also a key factor. You need to look to remove as many carbs from your diet as you can - so all sugar, fruit, bread/rice/pasta/potatoes. Also, anything yeast based and fermented, so Marmite and soy sauce, vinegar and alcohol are all out. Smoked foods too. It's a really hard diet, but it will kill off the overgrowth of candida albicans which is the key culprit.

Make sure that you have a good stock of anti-thrush stuff at home too. The Canestan pessary is really good, used in conjunction with the cream. Make sure you're not using fragranced stuff in the bath/shower, and wash all your underwear on a really hot wash.
