ds (22m) had a nasty fall yesterday when we were out in some woodlands. Has a hole on his forhead that bled like nothing I'd ever seen on him, scraped cheek and leg. When we made it back to 'civilisation' a lovely pub landlord and the first aider there cleaned him up a bit and told me to keep ds awake till ambulance arrives. Ambulance gave ds a very quick check (light in his eyes which he focussed on and followed) and didn't seem too concerned. Just the general 'if you get concerned or he starts throwing up etc. take him to a&e'. Ds was fine in the evening and most of today. Being his mischievous normal self. Playing with him just now he felt a bit warm and I took his temp... 38.5 (nearly 100). He doesn't seem 'off colour' though.

He's had a slightly iffy tummy for the last few days as well (dh is down with some stomach bug and fever).

So my question really... could the temperature be caused by the fall and if so should I take him into a&e? As I said before, he seems fine and not overly lethargic for close to his bed time.

Cheers

does his cut look infected/red/sore and is he up to date with immunisations including tetanus?

SoupDragon · 19/06/2006 19:32

I'd say it's due to your DHs stomach bug rather than DSs fall.

SoupDragon · 19/06/2006 19:34

The Head Injury leaflet I got on Saturday didn't mention temperatures at all, IIRC it said to look out for vomitting more than twice, headaches and sleepiness and also to wake (or at least rouse) DS when I went to be and once inthe night.

sparklemagic · 19/06/2006 19:38

MrsbigD, I do sympathise, being rational goes out of the window when it's your own child doesn't it!

I think if it was me, I would ring the GP in the morning for an emergency appointment, if his temperature is still so high. No GP will mind checking him out after a bad fall like that.

Don't know if this is reading too much into things or not, but my DS had the worst virus of his life about a week after he broke his leg (at 16 months old, poor mite!) he was really ill and ended up with antibiotics, the ONLY time he's ever had them before or since (he's almost 4 now). I wonder if the shock the body and mind must experience after a nasty fall or injury, can make the body more susceptible to viruses? I dunno. I just think maybe it's not totally unrelated, possibly!

MrsBigD · 19/06/2006 19:56

Thanks for all the input so far :) Really appreciate it.

quite possible that an injury could lower the immune system but then again it could just be coincidence Grin

As for the cuts...leg and cheek look ok and I've been putting a teatree & manuka ointment on so shouldn't get infected. The wound on his head is covered by a plaster as it was quite deep and I dare not take it off at the moment or put anything on it... will try and pry it off in the morning though if temp hasn't gone down to check whether it's infected.

Rising ds during the night... no need Grin he keeps raising us... awful sleeper and last night was no different.

As for tetanus... no idea... is that included in the normal baby jabs?

One good thing tonight though... dh, dd and ds asleep atm so peace and quiet Grin

yip, if he has had all of his jabs so far and his cuts are nice and clean (and the fall was in woodland in britain. am sure the temp is completely unrelated to head inj.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/06/2006 20:00

Tetanus is indeed included in all the normal baby jabs. I don't think I'd go to A+E in your current situation.

MrsBigD · 19/06/2006 20:04

chapsmum yes it was woodlands in Britain ... though a nice weekend trip to Brittanie would have been nice too Grin

NQC - ds should be alright then re tetanus as he's had all his shots to date (which of course he was not impressed about either)

Don't think I'll bother a&e unless of course he's spiking tonight. Though with the amount of calpol I got into him he should be ok .

I'm feel so useless when the kids are ill

Should have said - if the head wound is infected, you should see red tender puffyness around it. You might manage to check it's ok without taking off the plaster ...

NotQuiteCockney · 19/06/2006 20:06

And you're not the only one feeling useless. DS1 had a fall, and hurt his wrist, when we were on holiday, and I drove myself mad wavering about whether to take him to the GP, then about whether to take him to the radiographer. (We went, it wasn't broken.)

MrsBigD · 19/06/2006 20:09

last time he headbutted me today it didn't seem to be red or puffy, and obviously not too tender either. I think things like that are worse for the parents eh? Kid's oblivious whilst we worry about worse case scenarios... a the bliss of innocent ignorance

ds got the plaster off for me and wound looks nice and clean . Problem now is though he won't let me put a fresh one on. Here's hoping he won't knock it and it'll strt bleeding again :)
