I'm having a cyst and ovary removed, what can I expect?!

I have a 9cm cyst which kind of envelopes my ovary so they are going to take the lot out. I can call for my ca125 levels tomorrow, they say it's probably benign.

I'm worried about the consequences of having one ovary (amongst other things) has anybody got any experiences they could share with me?

I have. It was an emergency whilst abroad and I was three months pregnant! So quite scary. But they did it through keyhole surgery and it was fine! Bit sore and swollen afterwards and I was terrified to poo. Also had no effect ony fertility as I conceived the 1st month I tried. Hope this helps to reassure you.

I've conceived two children with one ovary, following a cyst-and-ovary removal when I was nine. Hope that helps you not to worry.

I went in for cyst and ovary removal laparatomy but in the end they did keyhole and only removed half ovary. Pain for a week or so afterwards and conceived v quickly few months later...good luck

I had something similar just over a year ago. Mine turned out to be a large benign dermoid cyst. I was very sore for about a week and had 3 weeks or so off work as I work with very young (very active) children.

I don't know if it's linked or not, but I started showing very strong menopausal signs within 6 months of having my ovary removed (I'm mid forties) and am now on HRT. My consultant said that the cyst had probably been there for around 10 years, growing slowly.

I had benign cyst and ovary removed at age 14, now 33. It has made no difference to my life whatsoever, apart from solving the terrible abdominal pain due to the cyst pressing on things thatI was getting at the time, obviously! Got pregnant easily. I think the remaining ovary 'takes over' all the work. Hope this helps, and your operation goes well.

I had this too, when I was in my early 20s. Has made absolutely no difference to anything to all.

I was a bit sore (from the operation wound, not my insides) for a week or so and had to take things easy for a few weeks. Otherwise, nothing at all untoward!

Good luck with your op, but really you have nothing at all to fear. Just stock up on treats and books so that you can have a lovely couple of weeks afterwards of taking it easy.

thank you for all your brilliant reassuring replies, I'm feeling better about it now. it feels weird knowing that there is something inside me that shouldn't be there! I'd better organise some help with my boys for the sore time after the op...

Hi. I had this a few years ago. Cyst and ovary removed. It was 10cm and they decided too large for keyhole so had to do a laparotomy. I was signed off work for 6 weeks.

One thing to keep an eye in in future is mental health. I know it sounds weird but my dr explained that hormonal changes were possible which could lead to problems if not dealt with. Probably not likely but just wanted to mention it.

Hope everything goes well.
