H pylori

I have been tested positive for h pylori, the Dr has prescribed me two sets of antibiotics a very strong dose, I will be starting them tomorrow, will they knock me about? my friend has been giving me horror stories. I think my ferritin level which is 16 is low because of this silly h pylori, any useful advice will be appreciated, I am still having hair loss.

I've had it, took the duo tablets omeprazol and t'uther one. Cleared me right up, unfortunately it's back I fear, I just have no time to go docs.
I hate it. Anything rich, citrus-y or anything eaten after 8 kills me. I have the acid reflux and live on bloody tums.
Really should make an appointment tbh, thanks for reminding me. X

Oops. It's obviously THAT important.

oh dear minion.

Have you tried Ranitidine? I found that really helped- Gaviscon and tums were useless.

JustBecauseICan · 05/09/2013 18:32

I tell you what did help my symptoms- and was recommended by a pharmacist Mner at the time- Gastrocote - they are butterscotch tasting lozenges and so much nicer/cheaper and more effective than Gaviscon. The pharmacist in Boots was really surprised when I asked for them and said no-one had asked for them in years- basically since gaviscon started to be so heavily marketed. I always have a mahooooosive tub of Gastrocote in now (in fact still have 1/3 of tub from my h.pylori days)

To eat, I read (and tried, and think it did work a bit) beetroot and courgettes soothe the acidy feeling. Manuka honey good also. I basically threw everything at it when it didn't go after the first lot of antibiotics.

JustBecauseICan · 05/09/2013 18:33

And Holland and Barrett 200mg pepperming oil capsules. Never be without them now. Any acid starts up again and they do the trick. Magic stuff.

Thanks just I have heartburn now, I didn't have it before the antibiotics, is this normal? I really feel like giving up, but I know it's the wrong thing to do, I just don't want to be worse of now than before, when I didn't have symptoms.

Went to the Dr this morning about the redness in my mouth, she said it was because of the anitibiotics, she said it was most likely the metronidazole that was making me feel sick, so she said take twice daily rather than three times. I am so silly I didn't even ask whether I should continue taking the rest of the metronidazole after the 7 day course, or did she mean just take two a day and forget the rest, how can I be so stupid.

JustBecauseICan · 06/09/2013 19:08

I imagine finish the course but over longer time.

That's the one that made me feel like I had a brick in my belly.

alwaysme · 06/09/2013 19:28

Mum had this. Chemist told her that she would feel absolutely awful but he promised her that if she took the full course, the H Pylori would be gone. Boy, did it make her feel crap but she stuck to it and it worked. Good luck :)

prettyanddainty · 06/09/2013 21:16

Thanks just and always yes it's crap, I feel like giving up but I wont, so I guess I will just carry the shitty metronidazole over, just my belly also feels like its got a brick in it.

Hi. I took the h pylori meds a few years ago as a precaution. I had NSAID induced stomach ulcers which bled, eating their way right through to an artery and I nearly died. I still take a PPI (omezaprole type thing). The biopsy showed I didn't have h pylori but they treated me while the stomach was healing just in case. They were horrible but not as bad as vomiting and shitting blood, multiple tràsfusions and coma and the rest of it.

H pylori is linked to stomach cancer so it is good that they found it and treated it. They only discovered it a few years ago and it has revolutionised treatment of ulcers and other gastric illnesses.

The antibiotics will take a day or two to leave your system but you will feel much better very soon, and reassured I hope that it won't cause any damage.

Florabeebaby · 11/09/2013 09:49

Ask your dr for some antacids as well...My DH had the triple therapy and it basically destroyed his stomach and caused an ulcer. The lining was already sensitive due to H Pylori and without the antacids it got worse.
Lansoprazole or Omeprazole maybe?

prettyanddainty · 11/09/2013 10:04

ginger how scary, glad you are ok now, I do still feel a bit yucky, so maybe I have to wait a couple of days.
flor I have got some lansoprazole so I will probably take one or two a day for a bit. x

Glad your antib treatment is finished pretty.

In sympathy with you Grin I have just gone back on omeprazole for a while. Had a gastric thing last week which made me feel as though the h.p was back. Doc says prob just a sensitive stomach after the h.p so to try the omeprazole for a bit.

prettyanddainty · 11/09/2013 13:12

Thanks just I have taken a lansoprazole this morning because I do still feel a bit sick, hopefully the damn h pylori is killed.x
