Which mini pill is the least hideous in terms of side effects please? Cerazette, Micronor, Femulen..

Need to go back on mini-pill. Have been reading horror stories about Cerazette and it making women feel depressed/anxious.

Have a history of mild depression/anxiety so it's worrying me.

Copper coil just removed after three months of continous bleeding and bloating.

Depo didn't agree with me at all.

Would appreciate any thoughts on which of the mini pills are least hideous in side effect terms. Appreciate none are perfect. Need something after accidental pregnancy and miscarriage last year, too scared to try natural fertility methods again.

I take Cerazette and love it as I don't have periods whilst taking it, but I've heard it's going to be withdrawn soon apparently Sad

hattyyellow · 03/09/2013 13:23

Thanks 2madboys - Do you know why they're withdrawing it?

I was on Cerazette for 2 years and never had any problems. I have a history of panic attacks and anxiety and but I didn't experience any again while on Cerazette so it wasn't bad for me.

Can you have a chat with your GP about the best option considering your history?

ilovepowerhoop · 03/09/2013 13:27

they are starting to use cheaper versions e,g, there was a thread a few days ago about cerelle being given as an alternative (same active ingredient but different manufacturer).

I had fortnightly periods with femulen and micronor and ended up on cerazette which stopped my periods for the 3 years I took it. I currently have the mirena coil which has also pretty much stopped my periods.

On the other hand I took cerazette and went a bit nuts. Really bad mood swings and anxiety.

I took micronor a million years ago and don't remember that causing any problems...

Thanks so much all, this is really helpful.

Sadly GP is fairly useless. With my copper coil she said "I don't really know what to say, I haven't really experienced these problems before". Mentioned Cerazette and the depression link and she just shrugs. So I think I need to research it myself and hear experiences and hopefully decide, she's not bothered what I have as long as it's not combined pill (history of migraine).

Hatty - I am in the same position as you - I have very occasional aura and have been taken off coc.

I have tried cerazette (swollen breasts, labia, and bad constipation) Femulen which I have used previously (same, constipation even worse) and micronor (gave it 8 days and it was just the same so I have given it all up for now). I had a rectocele repair in the middle of it and am supposed to avoid getting constipated. As far as I can see, progestogens (like pregnancy) make me constipated so I cannot see a way forward with them.

The only one I had any bleeding with was cerazette. I had no periods on any of them. I am having loads now (perimenopause :( )

side effects vary person to person so other people's experiences are sadly not much use. If you read the pill leaflets (or the leaflets for any medication) you will see a huge list of possible side effects ranging from death downwards.

I've been absolutely fine with both microgynon and cerazette for years. Tell your GP all your history and remember if a pill doesn't agree with you, you can change.

I note you said 'natural fertility' - it's not natural contraception! Meantime back to the trusty condom and spermicide.

happygirl87 · 06/09/2013 01:22

I found Cerazette brought my depression back, but Micronor has been great (except its killed my libido. DP is not loving it Blush but Im happy! Grin )

Ahhh, how can medical science not have invented a contraceptive without side effects yet! Thanks so much for all these thoughts, will read through and think through all options. I'm well aware that what works for one women works not so well for other bodies, but useful to see which ones tend to mess up emotions etc the worst.

Cheers all.
