Contraception that helps with heavy periods for 49 year old?!

I know I can't take the combined pill (age and also migraines with aura), but is there something else that is safe for me to take and that will help with my very painful heavy periods? I don't need it for contraception (dh had the snip ten years ago), just to make my periods lighter. I've had a mirena coil before, very painful, so don't fancy that again. How have others got on with depo injection or the implant?

Hi Attila,

The Mirena did work out previously, except I had an ectopic pregnancy with it! My husband had the snip nine years ago, so that isn't a danger now and I'm having it fitted purely to control my periods, which it did last time - I had no periods at all. The only bit I'm dreading is the fitting, which was very painful the first time round Sad.

My periods have been like this for about one to two years I think. I'm 49 and I have read and heard that a lot of women have heavier periods during peri menopause.
