Why would horse fly bites flare up a week later?

Got bitten in three places on my legs last Saturday (8 days ago). I put antihistamine cream on for a day or two, then then went like yellow fluid filled blisters. I resisted scratching. They seemed to heal and I put on Sudacreme when they went a bit scabby. They had almost disappeared by yesterday.

Today... whole different story. They have suddenly flared up and are itching like hell and burning. They look as red as they did on day 2.

Is this normal?

Maybe there is some infection there?

I would suggest you get them looked at by your GP in case you need antibiotics.

DD has just had surgery to remove a mole like growth that stemmed from an insect bite three years ago, so certainly worth getting them checked out.

Cellulitis? Blisters, hot red surrounding skin?

Not blisters, just itching like hell and gone all red again. I'm going to try a mild steroid cream overnight and see what happens.

My mum has horse fly bites from a month ago which keep flaring up and itching again. Also, my son is allergic to insect bites and his always flare several times. Have you tried anti-histamine tablets? They are good for the itch and swelling.

Bites can flare up on me if I get bitten again, even weeks later.

Hey sure horseflies? Summer has been fab and news highlighted increased insect bites. We were in Cornwall totally infected byhorseflies cut dh had suspected Lyme disease bite by tick. Do you do lots of walking???? Check with GP. Great summer but other annoyances to deal with....

Ps do they look like bulls eyes?

thenightsky · 02/09/2013 22:40

They look like a little rip in the top layer of skin and then the surrounding area is red and raised. They then seem to develop a yellow fluid filled blister, which I'm currently sitting on my hands to stop myself scratching!

I've been on antihistamine tablets. I take them pretty much daily throughout the summer due to bad hayfever. I've been rubbing antihistamine cream into the bites. When they got crusty, I then used Sudacreme to try and get them to heal a bit quicker. They looked pretty much finished with by about day six, but then suddenly acted like they are brand new again. grrrrr.

Get hot water onto a cotton pad, as hot as you can bear, and press it onto it.

You probably have got another bite somewhere and you're flooded with histamine again.

Stay out of the sun as well, in case it's a hog weed reaction.

I have a horrible horse fly bite on my shin at the mo. and I've put iodine on it as it was getting infected. I'm taking anti hists a d dabbing crime on it too, but the hot water compress takes the itch and redness out.

Draw around it with biro, and if the red is spreading, or travelling up a vein, get to the A and E as you could have blood poisoning.
