Anyone found levothyroxine affected periods?

I was diagnosed as having a slightly underactive thyroid at the start of this month. I've been taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine since then. I'm now on day 41 of my cycle with no sign of AF. My cycle is generally 30-32 days. Has anyone who's been taking it for longer than me found it was disruptive to their cycle?

Hoping for some positivity. I am 33 and Feb last year had a miscarriage. My periods never returned regular afterwards. Finally went to doc 7 weeks ago and after bloods discovered I had hypothyroidism and have been put on Eltroxin. Still no period. I'm really starting g to give up hope of ever getting pregnant. All my other bloods came back normal.

You will get there but it will take a while to get things right in your body.

Thyroxine has a long half life. This means your bloods may not show "correct" levels till around 6-8 weeks. And this may still need some adjusting. You should be being asked to return for blood tests soon to check current levels.

What was your tsh?

For pregnancy ideally tsh needs to be below 2 iirc, most places would prefer 1.

The reproductive cycle can take around 3-4 months to properly reset after any major changes. The book "it starts with the egg" describes the impact on egg quality of any additional vitamin eg folic acid as taking 3 months.

The best thing to do would be to eat really well, take the recommended folic acid and vitamin d.

Thyroid patients often need other things like iron, zinc, b12, folate and vit d too. You could take an all in on preconception multi vitamin but be very aware that you must take within 4 hours of your thyroxine.

>>You must stop any vitamin with biotin in for a good few days / week before a thyroid test.

>>Always have your thyroid test in the mornings, around 8-9 am. Take the thyroxine after the test.

>>keep a very consistent routine for taking the thyroxine. 30 mins to and hour before breakfast.

It might be best to focus on overall health and well being for a good 6 months when everyone is balanced before you think about conception.

Omg me too. My dose of thyroxine was doubled at the start of my cycle from 25mcg to 50. I usually ovulate on cd19 out of 32 day cycle. I'm now on cd24 and ovulation has still not happened. The only change has been the Levo dosage. What a nightmare!

@Toniiiii I know this post was a while ago but did your ovulation return to normal?

JekiJendor · 15/02/2026 16:06

Yes it normalised after 2-4 months but it turns out I had other underlying issues like PCOS. Myo-inositol and metformin finally sorted out my ovulation a month after starting which means my PCOS had more impact on my ovulation than the hypothyroidism. I still use levothyroxine 25mcg daily though.
Name changed but it’s still me.
