Toddler Diarrhea

KIRST003 · 17/06/2006 08:31

My 15 month old toddler has had diarrhea now for about 5 weeks. Have been to the doctor and stool tests came back normal. As far as I know I haven't changed his diet, and he doesn't eat the same everyday anyway. About 3 weeks ago it was every few hours but now only 1 or 2 times in 24 hours but still very runny. Anyone else had this?
Any advice would be helpful?

Yes - I had it with mine a few months ago, exactly as you describe. It is quite common apparently as the toddlers bowel is not long enough to allow the food to be digested and compacted in the way we know it so the food comes out quickly and a lot of it whole. They just grow out of it apparently, but in the meantime, take him to be weighed regularly to ensure he is not losing weight.

have you though about giving him some good bacteria?
if he has had diarrhoea, if levels of good bacteria will be very low. If you go to a health shop (or online) you can get probiotics in a tasteless powder which you add to juice/milk/water. they are much better than the yoghurt drinks, which contain a lot of sugar and hardly any good bacteria.
Solgar ABCdophilus is a great one, Higher nature is good to.
They are a bit expensive but one jar lasts for ages and ages, as you only use a quarter teaspoon each day.

Another vote for probiotics. Also kumera (sweet potato) has been excellent at firming up ds.

Thanks everyone
I'll give everything a go! I must admit he seems fine in himself but I'm the one getting tired of clearing it up!
