Anyone taken Magnesium to help with sleep difficulties?

Have struggled with my sleep for years and apparently it can be linked to Magnesium deficiency? Would be interested to hear other people's experiences of this. tia

Can't be of any help but dh struggles with sleep awfully so marking place for any advice.

Have never heard of the link to magnesium.

Having stumbled across an article I realised I had a lot of symptoms of Magnesium deficiency. Hopefully we can both benefit from this!

He has used nytol (sp?) in the past but doesn't like the idea of taking it all the time.

It is not unusual for him to only have 3-4 hours of sleep a night and he is always shattered. He falls asleep but then wakes and is up the rest of the night.

Are you the same?

If you think you are deficent in magnesium take 400mg for a few weeks then you can take 200mg. If you take it before bed it can aid sleep.

In Germany, GP gave me an injection/infusion of magnesium to help relax me. I had it once a week for 6 weeks.

DH was also prescribed Magnesium tablets to help relieve cramp. That was in 1996.

I started taking magnesium four days ago as I`ve been having problems sleeping for a few weeks now.

Ive been taking it in the evening. Last night I slept better than I have for quite a while, but couldnt say for sure that it`s thanks to the magnesium [unhelpful]

German DR said magnesium is a muscle relaxant.

Magnesium is also in milk (and other foods obvs) - hence the hot milk at bedtime idea if you can't sleep/sleep poorly.

I do take a magnesium supplement several nights a week - tablets from Boots (I think it's a dose of 750mgs so not a huge amount), and I do sleep for longer, and more deeply, on the nights I take it. I began this a couple of years ago. I think it does work.

make sure you take the right kind of magnesium. The cheap stuff, calcite doesn't absorb well.

I take magnesium citrate in the evening, to help with muscle soreness and sleep. And yes I think it helps. I am away on holiday at present so cannot find the references to the books that convinced me to take it. I read up a lot before taking it, and then took the advice of a nutritionalist, who also advised magnesium. One of the books I read was called something like the magnesium revolution. My asthma has also got somewhat less brittle since taking the magnesium. Some medications can deplete magnesium - although I forget which of the several I am on it is!

Another way of getting magnesium into the body is to have a nice long bath with Epsom salts added, which might suit some people better.

Forgot to say, you can also buy a skin spray called magnesium oil. It's not really an oil, but feels a bit oily. It stings if you are very magnesium deficient, so is more suitable for topping up once serious deficiency has been addressed by other means.

I've got that oil, magso and it stings like a bugger! I didn't know it signified more serious deficiency, that's interesting. I've also been waking early and through the night.
What's the best supplement to take, to avoid the calcite stuff?

Thanks for all of your advice. I bought some from Tescos 250mg and it didn't really help to be honest. Can you recommend a good one?

From everything I've read - magnesium is better absorbed through the skin. I've used magnesium oil - rubbed a little bit into my wrists. Not sure that I noticed much difference with sleep.

The BEST is to have an epsom salts bath - very very soothing.

Also - tissue salts, which I don't think are easy to find any more - Mag Phos, Calc Phos and Kali Phos taken together before bed are very helpful.

You can get Epsom salts in the chemists. They are sometimes keep with the laxatives.

It will take a couple of weeks before you notice any difference.
