Can my Baby contact measles?

I am sure this has been done before...so sorry!
I have a four month old baby and four older vaccinated children. I live in a community with an increasingly low uptake of MMR vaccinations.
Is my Baby at risk and what ccan i do to lessen this risk if anything??
Many thanks

Are you breastfeeding? If so, and if you've had measles or been vaccinated yourself, that will give your baby some protection for another couple of months at least if you keep it up.

vaccination against measles cannot be passed as protection from mother to child. or if it can it is extremely limited. if you have had measles and you are breastfeeding you are providing quite good protecton. If you have had measles and you are not breastfeeding the baby is protected up to six months before your antibodies wear off.

Also remember that just because the MMR uptake is low, it doesn't mean the rest aren't vaccinated - alot opt for singles so arn't in the governments statistics.

i have asked a similar question at health centre two months ago as baby in ds2's nursery group contracted measles. apparently babies are protected upto approx. a year after birth by passive immunity passed on from mother through the placenta. this is if you've had measles yourself or if you've been vaccinated.
this is also the reason why mmr vaccination is given around 12-15 months (as then this passive immunity starts to wear off). occasionally babies have lower immunity against illnesses though and get it anyway, so it is probably best to keep your baby away from a child with measles.
i was told that if ds2 was a bit older he would probably have been called early for his mmr with this other baby infected at his nursery.

For what is worth, I catched measles as a baby even before my mother, who also had had it, stopped breastfeeding. So IMO it's a matter of chance.

Breatfeeding is not foolproof, but it is decent protection generally.
