C125 blood test for ovarian cancer

I've just come from gp who called me in for blood test results. I had them done because of menopausal symptoms and bloating. my levels (levels of what!?) are abnormally high.

l scored 71 and over 35 is raised risk. Gp sending me for ultrasound and to gynecology. I miserably failed to ask Gp any intelligent questions.

I am a bit shell shocked as i hadnt even realised they were testing for cancer. I am on my own tonight and dont want to phone anyone as i may blub and worry them.

Does anyone have any experience/words of wisdom for me?

CA125 can also be raised if endometriosis or fibroids is also present. Please try not to worry yourself unduly and further talk with your GP tomorrow. Its awful that you have been left in such a state, someone from the surgery should have taken more time to talk to you.

thank you Attilla. I will get some proper perspective, just froze at the time.

This happened to me.

I had a very similar level to you and was really worried. The consultant told me that usually it is much higher than that if cancer is present. I also had pain and bloating and had endometriosis, fibroids and ovarian cysts!

This test is notoriously unreliable. My mums came back as perfectly normal, yet she had ovarian cancer - now recovered from.

I know it's hard but concentrate on the fact that this probably indicates fibroids or such like as the very likely outcome

thanks for your reassurances. I have ultrasound today (speed of this appointment also worried me initially, but I am glad I am not being left in uncertainty and things are moving quickly.)

Good luck with the ultra sound today.
Ovarian cysts are much more common than cancer
DD had an ultra sound and they found a cyst - was almost certain it was not cancer.
She had to wait 6 weeks and then have another ultra sound < I as her DM was very worrying myself sick>
But after 6 weeks the cyst had shrunk to a dot, so was not cancer.

well, I apparently have a fibroid the size of a grapefruit! Although this monster is obscuring one of my ovaries so it couldn't be seen, the operator was quite confident that she didnt see anything more amiss.

I am relieved, but also a bit confused about why I have such a large fibroid when I am perimenapausal. I never had problems with them when I was younger and full of estrogen, and that's what causes them.

thanks to posters who all reassured me.

Oh good! I had a feeling you'd be just fine : ) what a relief for you. Hope it's sorted so.
