Bacterial conjunctiviis - must it be treated by antibiotics?

Hello wise ones
baby ds2, 5 months has classic bacterial conjunctivitis, green goop in a red and rhuemy eye.
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow but do you know if it has to be treated by antibiotics, as would rather lay off them.

Any help greatly appreciated

My Ds has this at the mo and has just been prescribed chloraphenical redidrops. Batheing (sp?)in cooled boiled water or saline solution seemed to make it worse. Will watch this space with interest. He's 27mo tho and has croup as well, apparently they often go together.

twiglett is right - and it works - from other mum's experience - dd has cream fucidic cream which also works along with bathing with cooled boiled water.

i always use boiled water with salt in, cooled, and wiped over the eye in cotton wool as required. It has always worked. May be a fluke though

I've used breast milk too, and it does work! Ds had repeated gooey eyes when he first started nursery and after two lots of antibiotic drops I did the milk thing and it worked as fast, if not faster than the drops. It did come back though a few weeks later and I was recommended hypercal tincture (homeopathic drops which you dilute a lot and then wipe across eyes). It was brilliant, infection cleared in a day and he has never had it since.
