High grade dyskaryosis 12 months after being told everything fine- help!

On Friday I received my smear results, I have high grade dyskaryosis and have to go for a colposcopy. It's only by fluke that I had a smear test this year. I had one last year that showed mild dyskaryosis then when I had the colposcopy (i tested pos for hpv too) the nurse said there was nothing there and put me back into the 3 year system. My gp surgery messed up tho and contacted me for one this year, so given I was concerned and have other gynae issues I thought I'd go. Blooming good job I did. Just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar.

They said at my last colposcopy that my cervix was irritated due to using a cap. I've had bleeding in between periods as well for past 2 yrs and went through loads of examinations and a scan for that which all came back ok. That cleared up but started again in May of this year. We've been TTC since I had the last colcoscopy last year, but no joy as yet. Not sure if its all connected. I've posted a few things on here about the weird bleeding/discharge but I only seem to get that in the last 2 wks of my cycle. Surely if it was related to cervical changes it would be all the time?

Anyone had anything similar? I am really scared, I have a 2 1/2 yr old I'm terrified I'm not going to see grow up. The colcoscopy advice line at the hospital won't return my calls. I'm going to try them again mon. Can things change so quickly? Does anyone know how effective colcoscopies are?

The NHS has some good leaflets online which might help, but first, don't panic.

I had an irregular smear, mild changes, a colposcopy, mild to moderate, another colcopscopy, still mild. They're not going to check again for another year. As far as I'm aware, even at high grade, I don't think the cells are cancerous, they're just at the pre-cancerous stage that will be more likely to become cancerous sooner rather than later. If you're having another colposcopy, they will check what level its all at, then I think there are some forms of treatment they can do there: essentially they can burn off the dodgy cells (this is clearly a very lay-person understanding of this!) Three of my friends have had this done, in one case it keeps returning and she's had a further procedure, all are totally fine now many years later.

From what I understand, cervical cancer takes quite a while to develop but has no symptoms, which is why all the screening is really important as you wouldn't usually 'feel' changes, but it means once they do realise its happening you're unlikely to get to a stage they can't treat it in a fairly straightforward manner.

Its a bit freaky, but I sing the praises of the staff in my local hospital and while Im aware I have to watch it an will probably need more invasive treatment I'm not worried about it anymore. You'll be in good hands, so try not to stress too much.

I had CIN 111 - or Carcinoma insitu , displasia grade 4, 30 years ago. My smear test 18 months before was abnormal but they forgot to let me know.
I was told before the op to not get pregnant as that could make it develop faster. They were so concerned that they talked about the possibility of having a hysterectomy.

After the cone biopsy where they took the whole of the rim of the cervix away and more higher up, they said everything was fine. All smears since have been normal.

Good luck

Oh, and I had no symptoms.

I know exactly how you feel, it's horrible. I had severe dyskariosis 4 months ago. I hadn't had a smear for 10 years so had kittens. When I went the colposcopy I looked at the TV screen and you could see loads of white blobs all over the cervix (which I knew wasn't normal because I had had to have a smear ages ago when I had 3 inconclusive smear test results, and then it was just pink and clear). Anyway I was frantic and assumed the worst, thought it was bound to be bloody cancer, in any case all was fine, and I just have to have 6 monthly smears for a few years.

It is very scary though. I don't blame you for being frightened, I walked around in a panic for days, thinking all sorts. But those CIN 3 pre cancerous cells can be there for years and years apparently. I am sure that because you have had a smear etc recently you will be fine. Have you got someone in RL to give you some support?

Thanks so much everyone. I'm just really confused and incredibly concerned that if I had gone with what the colcoscopy nurse had advised last year I'd still be sitting here now non the wiser and probably for another 2 years to come! I'm panicking that she missed it last year because it's some rare form they can't see & how can i rely on them to see it this time? Just wish there was a medical person I could speak to but as it's the weekend there's no one. So ill just have to carry on worrying myself witless. Doesn't really help that my dad died of cancer at a young age, so im extra scared. Ironically yesterday, when I got the results, was 15 yrs to the day since he passed away.
