Know what you mean about feeling like a scaremonger - I can get quite overzealous now when chatting to people about chickenpox after my experience! Most of my RL aquaintances look at me in complete disbelief that CP is anything other than a mild childhood illness that's a bloody inconvenience.

handlemecarefully · 22/06/2006 23:04

Sorry pyschomum - yes I agree I understand it is in fact most infectious for a couple of days before spots appear (how crap is that)...and then for 5 days after.

Actually I am glad I read this thread. I was really bitter and resentful that we had to cancel our holiday due to CP - but now (appreciating the impact it has on some vulnerable groups) I am so glad that I did (rather than wing it and try and get on a flight anyway - which I could have done since dd wasn't all that spotty)

psychomum5 · 22/06/2006 23:05

feel for you misdee, I really do ((and hugs if you accept virtual ones ))

And then theres me feeling all guilty again cos of feeling like I do and yet there is always someone out there going thro worse!!

grrr at life today tho....I could rant lots today. hence why I have avoided MN today till now as I got an antisocial head on today!!!

sorry for the poor attempt at humur too....

SaintGeorge · 22/06/2006 23:07

Mucho sympathy Psycho - that sounds awful.

I tend to scaremonger about cp too.

I have no immunity and have had cp repeatedly. Luckily for me it seems to be getting milder as I get older AND at least I can't get shingles since the virus has to go dormant in your system for that. I would simply catch cp again.

I also worked for the Public Health Laboratory Service and one of my jobs was rushing out zoster supplies to neonate units for teenies who had caught cp. I had to deliver it direct to the units and seeing those very sick little babies always made me cry.

handlemecarefully · 22/06/2006 23:11

SaintG - do you have no immunity generally or just no immunity to CP?

GeorginaA · 22/06/2006 23:14

Funnily enough, I was chatting to someone the other day who mentioned she had no immunity to CP - catches it EVERY time she's in contact with it. Immune system (as far as I know) is otherwise fine.

psychomum5 · 22/06/2006 23:14

georginaA....you are the first ever person I have ever come across who has been thro similar. literally!!!

None of my RL friends have ever bothered about CP before being a worry....(well no, thats wrong. My real real friends no my panic as they lived thro it with me, its my 'aqquaitances' if you like that look at me as tho I am insane when I go into a panic when there is yet another outbreak at the schools). For me I panic as it means that in all likelyhood Natasha will get some type of reaction. In fact tho, as I write this, she hasn't had nearly so strong a reaction in the past year or so as she used to, so maybe she is finally building some type of resistance

I will add tho.......I don't remember what exactly they gave me vaccine wise, but I didn't realise that it wouldn't offer long term protection. Unless they did and I just didn't take it in because of course, at the point of vaccination, I not only was heavily pregnant and scared for my baby, but DD2 was also very very poorly withit herself and in isolation already and so I was scared for her too. ADDED to that....DD1 was not then 5 and was missing us terribly (as me her) and had to stay away too. All in all.....horrid time I am glad not to try and look back too!

SaintGeorge · 22/06/2006 23:15

That's were it gets a bit strange hmc.

I have no immunity at all to cp.

I had measles jabs as a child but have had measles twice, so suspect no immunity to it either.

I have a multitude of auto-immune syndromes which suggest that I have an over active immune system.

Go figure!

GeorginaA · 22/06/2006 23:17

It might be worth seeing if you can get a hold of your medical notes and check - because if you're still not immune and of childbearing age you can push for the chickenpox vaccination on the NHS (be prepared for a bit of a fight though - took me ages to persuade my GP ... and then it didn't even take, sob) - still a 10% chance it may not take, but potentially worth a try?

psychomum5 · 22/06/2006 23:19

and funnily enough (altho good in some ways I guess, if there has to be a bright lining), I still have no immunity to CP, but I don't actually keep getting it (apart from when natasha was born and we both had it). I am not sure of my own immune staus tho as my docs say that the immunity deficiancies that DD2 & DD3 have cane thro me, as when I do get poorly I am much more likely to get it slightly worse than'joe public'. So my immune system can't be that fab either then really!!!!

handlemecarefully · 22/06/2006 23:23

That is odd SaintG!

My two have both had CP twice so I'm hoping they don't turn out to be serial catchers!

psychomum5 · 22/06/2006 23:27

georgianA...no worries in that way really. Yes I am of child bearing age, but there will be no more for me as DH had the snip after baby no.5 and also I have the mirena coil too. (not because of terror of the 'snip' faiing, but because of its the treatment for my endometriosis!)

sooooo....would be a bloody huge shock shouls I fall again.

Would like to look into it for my daighters, but then the MMR didn't 'take' for them either, nor did their HIB vaccine, so I am slightly anti vaccines now as for 1, in my case thay have completely worked on us, and 2, the last ones they had (pnuemovax, cos of their immune probs) caused a massive siezure in DD3 as she reacted to it!

I am not anti vaccines all round tho....I still belive thay have their place....but I don't belive thay offer 100% protection, and I also think that they can sometimes cause more prob etc.

All mine have had all their vaccines tho....and extra....its just unlucky that I put them thro it and then they not take..!

psychomum5 · 22/06/2006 23:38

Anyho....I think that is enough of me tonight and my 'lowness'....sorry if I have scared or upset anyone....really not wanting too

I am off to bed ( at the time, 11.30!)

tis a new day tomoorow and hopefully I will be brighter

I am just ever so slightly bored and stir crazy from still recovering from my car accident and slowing going insane

got holiday in a few days tho (hoooooray), and I just not gotta get out and get a few treats for the kiddies. Retail tharapy tomorrow for a while with flameboo will sort me out no end. I definate withdrawral here, along with the lack of my nightly glass of wine too for the past month!!! (thought I would use a few emoticons for good measure there!!!

soooo....night nioght from me

GeorginaA · 23/06/2006 07:48

No, I can understand you'd be rather nervous of vaccines as a result!

For me, I still find I have quite a chickenpox phobia, even though I too am unlikely to get pregnant again (mirena too!) I've been toying getting ds2 vaccinated against chickenpox - not so much for him but for me (I'm most likely to catch it when he has it) as I'm guessing if the vaccine didn't take for me first time, it's unlikely to a second time.

It does seem a little excessive to have your child vaccinated against something for your benefit rather than theirs though, even if it is a vaccine with an excellent track record and very little side effects

nailpolish · 23/06/2006 08:41

hi belo

dd1 is fine now, just has some very small non-itchy scabs, its been 8 days since the spots appeared so she is going back to playgroup today. thanks for asking!
