Thigh pain hamstring or sciatica maybe?

I have been suffering with pain in the back of my thigh after I sit down. So I wake up and it doesn't give me any trouble until I sit down. when I then stand up I get agonising pain which makes me hobble until I walk it off.
It has been going on for about a month and I did mention it to doctor but they weren't really sure and justt said come back if it doesn"t get any better.
There was no incident or injury that started it off either.
Does anyone know what it might be and how I can help myself other than ibuprpfen etc..?

it does sound more like sciatica than thigh pain.

a little test is to lie flat, ask someone else to raise your leg by bending the hip with the knee straight out. if the pain is what you normally get its more likely a sciatica than a hamstring. also the range will be limited with regards to the other side.

physiotherapy should help and the use of an anti-inflammatory regularly like ibuprofen if you can take it.

I have a similar problem, so far they think its Sciatica too, but sending me for tests as I've other upper body problems that may be related

this site is really useful for symptom checking muscular ailments - click on the diagram in the area you have pain & it takes you to a related page.

& if its ongoing I can highly recommend a pain gone pen

good luck

Thanks rockinhippy. What is the pain gone pen?

its a little gadget that you can buy in Boots etc, sort of like a mini tens, it gets a charge by rubbing some sort crystals together when you click it - the charge is real as I discovered to my cost when I forgot you are not meant to use it with wet hand :-/ - you click it to send the charge in around the pain site - its a great portable way of dealing with localised pain without drugs

it was first recommended to me by an acupuncturist & I love mine & my DD can use it too :)

THIS

I have the one shown, which I find great, I was also given another black one with a gold trim that looks like an actual pen, not sure what the brand is, cant see it here, but if you find it, it was apparently much cheaper & works just as well
