Quick, urgent question about wisdom tooth extraction

Bagofmashings · 14/08/2013 08:02

I'm due to have a top wisdom tooth removed under local anesthetic this afternoon.
Does anyone know how long the recovery time will be? I've just found out I have pretty full on days at work on Friday & Saturday (my work is quite active and I need to talk a lot!). Should I put it off?
Thanks

Depends. I had top and bottom out on one side each go. Top one came out a dream and wouldn't have required much recovery. Bottom one took a lot of physical effort from the dentist and hence a lot if recovery afterwards - recommend lots of ice lollies to suck.

It's protruding from the gum, fully I think. I'm having it taken out as it's pudding on the other teeth.

Pushing, not pudding Grin

Really hard to generalise, but i would expect you would be fine for Friday as long as its not a complicated one. Make sure you have painkillers - if you think you might need something strong the dentist can prescribe for you.

Bumply when you say to took a while, how sort of long? And could you carry on with normal life ok and talk?

I went back to work after having mine out under the same circumstances. But I think I was very lucky - it didn't affect me like some of the stories you hear.

Good luck! Smile

I had one out last Wednesday (and the molar next to it) and it wasn't bad at all. It came out fairly easily, and the anaesthetic wore off in about 3 hours. On Thursday the jaw was achy and the area where the teeth had been was sore if I ran my tongue over it. I took paracetamol and that kept the edge off. Also, the area on the roof of the mouth where the injection went in was a bit sore. I could have worked but I'd booked a day off. By Friday it was much better, and by Saturday I could eat on that side if I was gentle.

Everyone is different though but I thought it was fine - and I had two big teeth out.

Good luck.

Ok, the general consensus seems to be that I should be ok. Although I'm kind of looking for an excuse to cancel, I'm not sure when would be a better time to do it.
Thanks for your replies
Wish me luck ! Wink Sad Smile

I had a top one out - not pre planned, because the dentist thought the pain he had been treating unsuccesfully was not my bottom tooth but the top one biting on it. Anyway, afterwards I walked the ten minutes back to my office and carried on working as normal.

Weelady77 · 14/08/2013 08:23

I had 4 out years ago, and apart from taking ages to stop bleeding I was fine and back to normal next day Smile

I have had all four of my wisdom teeth out at separate times and each time I went back to work straight away and apart from looking like a chipmonk from the stuffed cotton wool I was fine. Just make sure you have pain killers at the ready if you have any pain.

Good luck hope it goes well.

Thank you so much for all the reassuring comments. Thanks

One side fine, the other really swollen and painful. Sorry.

You should have an idea quite soon after its done if you'll be ok to work.

Bagofmashings · 14/08/2013 12:57

Just updating in case anyone else is worried about the same thing. So far, amazingly good.
It only took around 10 minutes, I had no pain what so ever apart from a tiny pin prick when she put the anesthetic in. No problem at all pulling it out and I had very little bleeding.
Nearly an hour later I feel fine and still have no pain, although the anesthetic hasn't warn off yet!
Looks like I'll be ok to work the rest of the week Smile

Yay! Well done. Grin

Make sure you have some neurogenesis plus for when the anaesthetic wears off. I felt great too for the first few hours but then felt as if I'd been kicked in the face by a horse!

ajandjjmum · 14/08/2013 15:49

Glad it went well.

LIG1979 · 14/08/2013 15:53

Mine was fine and less painful that when I had trouble with my wisdom teeth. However, I could not eat solid food for a while so the main problem was feeling a bit weak from lack of food after a couple of days.
