Asthma - finding it hard t breathe

I have asthma but its well controlled, very very rarely wheeze and although I take a preventer inhaler I usually only struggle if I get a chest infection. On sat night my asthma was bad used my ventolin inhaler loads of times, sunday I was ok. I am ill at the moment with tonsillitis so on anti b's. Tonight at tea time I started getting short of breath, still bad now, have a very slight wheeze, have taken ventolin 6 times in 3 hours. I'm a bit scared as this is all new to me as don't usually suffer like this, I have taken my peak flow and it is 500 normally it's over 600. How many times can I take ventolin and although scary is this is ok. I can move around ok but panic speaking for too long as feel out of breath.
TIA

I suspect its the weather for some reason- im also suffering atm. Had to give myself the equivalent of a neb this am and ventolin 2-3hourly today which is not good. May have to go to the drs soon.

Anyway if you arent as foolhardy as me and this is not normal for you I would suggest that it is very reasonable for you to go to the doctors.

When dt2's asthma is bad he has ten puffs every 4 hours and usually a three day course of steroids.
If your struggling I really would get checked out, can you call 111?

I have never needed a nebuliser. Is that just really strong ventolin? I have been waiting for dh to come home, our out of hours shuts at 8pm. I presumed I was ok just to keep taking the ventolin even though its way much more than normal. I am a bit worried now so that's making it worse.

large glass _ f it doesn't ease up soon I amy ring 111, feel a wimp though as I don't even sound bad as I don't get really bad wheezing, I have been to the gp before and seen a locum who says my chest is ok as my peak flow is good but it's always good!

I would get yourself checked out tonight if your struggling.

fengirl1 · 13/08/2013 20:41

Taking lots of ventolin may well make you feel shaky. If it hasn't helped, you need to call your emergency doctors NOW.

Sirzy · 13/08/2013 20:42

Don't pay too much attention to how you sound, its more about how you feel and your breathing. DS is only 3 but has quite bad asthma yet he rarely wheezes.

Mistyshore · 13/08/2013 20:43

I agree with largeglassofred. 10 puffs to get your breath back and then 4 puffs every 4 hours. Any more than that and you need extra help. I have steroids at home now for ds so I can get him started ASAP.

Asthma plans are different for everyone but if you're taking more than is normal for you get yourself to the docs.

boysrock · 13/08/2013 20:43

If you havent been like this before then I would suggest you get hold of the dr. They should have overnight cover. It may be that your tonsillitis is not helping matters. In fact have a look at your throat is any of it closing over?

Tbh I really think you need a real life medical opinion. Its guess work on the net.

Sirzy · 13/08/2013 20:48

On the 'tonsillitis' DS was once diagnosed with tonsitis by the GP because he had pus in his throat. He ended up in A and E that night and the fantastic doctor quickly realised that the puss was in a different place than for tonsillitis and was infact related to a severe chest infection.

Thanks ladies - well I rang 111 and had an ambulance sent out. Was a bit embarassed to be honest! But feeling much better now knowing that I am ok and it has eased up a bit now. They told me off for taking too much ventolin and suggested taking my steroid inhaler instead after 20 mins of the first ventolin dose. I am so pleased to have sensible advice - my asthma nurse says completely the opposite but I will follow their advice. Thank you for your advice, I felt much better after ringing 111 but needed a kick up the arse to do it :)
