Allergic to plastic, or something in plastic?

My ds has been potty training for 6 weeks or so and is doing well. However, a problem that has surfaced is that he seems to have a reaction to the plastic of the potty/toilet seat. If he sits on the loo for more than half a minute, he is left with big red welts across his bottom where he touched the plastic. These then go all dry and crusty - it's really awful, far worse than any nappy rash he ever had. I have bought him one of those padded plastic-covered seat reducers, which is better, but he still gets a reaction to it. I'm going to take him to Dr but I was wondering if any mumsnetters had a similar experience? Dh bought a wooden loo seat but it didn't attach properly to our loo so we have to find another one. I'm worried that this reaction indicates an allergy to plastic or some chemical in plastic which might be more serious in future. I get a rash from some kinds of rubber gloves - is this the same thing?

If you get a rash from rubber gloves could be some kind of latex allergy. Are you or your DS allergic to any particular foods - espcially banana or avocado as these are linked to latex allergy.

Trying to think of other things that have latex in that you/he may have come into contact with - like balloons for example and obviously condoms! Probably worth going to Dr if it persists and definitely mention your rash when wearing rubber gloves.

Hope this is of some help.

You also need to watch shoes - I can't wear pumps, plimsols, cheap shoes, some slippers or trainers (no Jellybes )

I can't wear elastoplast and (it prob won't upset your son) but no beads or plastic jewellry and I have rtrouble with some glasses (plastic coating on frame) hold up stockings and strapless bras!!

tallgirl - no one is allergic to avocados or bananas as far as I can tell, but the latex thing could be right - I tend to avoid soft plastic things and use fabric plasters as the waterproof ones bring both me and ds out in a little rash. And come to think of it, when he was a baby, if the tab of a disposable nappy touched his skin rather than being over the body of the nappy, it left a mark too. Hmmm. Katiemac - I hadn't thought of jelly shoes - what a pain if he can't wear those. I think I'll borrow his cousin's pari for a day in the summer and see if a reaction comes up. Don't think the strapless bra is going to be such a problem.

I have a problem at the dentist with the sucky thing- it always makes me heave. I can't snorkel for the same reason- different sorts of plastic in my mouth makes me heave. my friend tells me it's an allergy & the heaving is to prevent a worse reaction.

(according to a phone in on radio 2 in the summer people can be allergic to bananas!)
