Worried about results of blood test.

I know it's nothing serious. I went to GP because I haven't had a period for nearly four months. I had a blood test to check for hormone levels, then had to have it repeated the following week. I didn't really think they would find anything but apparently something was slightly raised in both results. I don't know what yet. The GP wants to do a 'phone consultation so can't be that bad. I haven't had any other symptoms apart from putting on about 3lbs in weight and my diet and exercise levels haven't changed.

Sorry about the ramble.

Hi, have you any other symptoms? I think pcos can cause weight gain.

RubySparks · 10/08/2013 20:23

Could be thyroid? That can cause problems with periods and weight gain.

No other symptoms only slight weight gain and no periods. If it was thyroid though wouldn't I feel exhausted? Which I don't.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common cause of a lack of periods or irregular periods.

What hormone levels have been tested?. When is the phone consultation taking place?.

I have thyroid and prolactin secreting micro tumour on my pituitary gland (don't panic, completely harmless and easily controlled with medication, totally not cancerous!) ... prolactin is the same hormone produced when breastfeeding (although I've never breastfed either of my dc) and it makes your body think you are pregnant or breastfeeding so it slows down ovulation and your periods.

My periods are back to normal when I take the pills.

Fairylea · 10/08/2013 22:06

Might not even be that of course!!

Kasterborous · 10/08/2013 22:12

Not sure what hormones have been tested, phone consultation is on Tuesday after 11.30.

Can you get pcos at 41? That's how old I am. I've never had problems getting pregnant in the past and I had our DD when I was 39. (After six miscarriages), which means I fell pregnant seven times without any problems.

My SIS had no periods after the birth of DC2 and was diagnosed with an underactive Thyroid. She had no other symptoms. It can be different for each person.

Peri-menopause also causes sudden missing periods for 4 months and then a period extending for 6 weeks but women over 40 usually. The hormone FSH will be too high even if Oestragen is normal.

Kasterborous · 11/08/2013 21:01

Does your SIS have to take medication digerd? As I only need a 'phone consultation I wouldn't have thought its my thyroid, or if it is its so mild I won't need medication.

Yes sis has taken Thyroxine for many years . But she was 32 at the time.
I suspect the hormone which was "too high", could be the FSH - folicular stimulating hormone- which DD had and meant she was not ovulating.
However, when I was in my 40s and TTC again, my gynae said, although I was having periods, it did not mean I was ovulating. In those days I did not have my FSH tested, but had a special Pituary/Thyroid function test and it was abnormal.

Thyroid function test is a special one. Did the doc do one?

Kasterborous · 11/08/2013 21:47

I'm not sure if I had a thyroid test or not. I think it's far more likely it's one of my hormones because the reason I went was because I haven't had a period and I'm 41 so that's more likely.

Yes, I think so too, but it is a little early at 41 for the majority of women.

I have a friend who after her 41st birthday just had no more periods and her DD was the same. But both had their DC in their 20s.
Unless more DC are wanted, how lovely to not have any more periods at that age. They also had no menopausal symptoms.

I spoke to the GP, my luteinising hormone level is elevated, they did two blood tests a week apart and was raised both times. I've been refered to an endocrinologist just to make sure my pituitary gland is okay. My GP couldn't really give me any idea of what might be going on. So none the wiser really.
