Ds2 (3) has had diarrhea for 5 days now and although he is toilet trained i have had to put him back into nappies as he poos so much! i took him to the dr yesterday who said i have to get a sample (lovely) and send it to the lab at the hospital, but today, well just now he has gone on his potty and its got blood in it - not loads but quite a bit - should i be worried what do you think i should do? he seems ok in himself and has been running about and playing, but im sure its not ok to have blood in your poo!??

Is the blood mixed in or just a bit at the edge? Is there mucus too?

NotQuiteCockney · 13/06/2006 17:12

Is it bright red blood? Or darker?

Bright red blood isn't a great thing, but it's not generally a really bad sign - it just means he's got a bit of broken skin inside his anus, probably from passing such acidic poo, for so long.

Oh, if it's dark blood, I'd go to A+E, as that indicates bleeding higher up the digestive tract, and could be quite dangerous.

Helenemjay · 13/06/2006 17:17

Well its not bright red im not sure how dark blood it was really i did get a sample of it but it wasnt mixed in it was kind of sat in little tiny pools at the top of it (gross, sorry - tea time!) he is ok but he has been tired and very grumpy for days i have no idea whats causing it as he hasnt been sick or anything so its not like a usual bug or anything!!???

Hmm, I would probably consider A+E if you have a children's A+E nearby? When bleeding is at the end of the digestive tract (e.g. piles) it really is quite bright. Anything else is worrisome. Maybe do NHS direct?

Helenemjay · 13/06/2006 17:25

Oh yeah i forgot about NHS direct i will call them now!! thanku!
